  • HI
I know the feeling when you are in so much debt ad have no one to turn to, at times I have cried with the stress of it all and I have two kids to get through school, college etc..however I joined at the begining of this year and have looked at the advice, regularly reviewed my budget and debts and have reduced my debts from 6,000 to just under a 1,000 which I am working hard to clear. I now carry a 'money book' with me and have worked out my weekly budget each month I get paid according to the demans of that month and now just take out that weekly amount of cash and live on that till the next week. Anything I have left over goes towards my overdraft. It's really hard but I feel proud of myself because I know that next year I'll be able to begin saving for a deposit to buy a property. And if i get really down I go and play tennis!!! Good luck!

  • Welcome to the thread Mokensef. Thats some pretty serious debtbusting you've been doing :T
  • It has been really hard but the best bit of advice was ditching the DMC and negotiating myself as I found they wesr costing me more money thanj I needed to pay out as I owed less than I thought! Have had to be careful as I had a couple of finacial surprises in the last few months but I aim to be debt free by June and book a really cheap holiday!!! Gotta keep motivated and will continue to use this site for support!

I echo what SBC says - fantastic work & welcome too, you're an inspiration :D

  • What sort of noises Sarah?

& What are you doing when they happen (i.e. accelerating, braking, turning corners?)

Well, I can't accurately describe it as whenever I hear it I turn the radio up and pretend it's not happening.:o The engine gets noisier and it is very difficult to accelerate, it slows down and takes a while to get going again, pretty scary when I was in the fast lane the other day. It does get going again but it is taking longer to build up any sort of speed so I am still driving it but staying in the slow lane. Also when I am pullling away from junctions it makes a terrible screeching noise and everyone turns round to look as it sounds like a police chase.

If you know anything about cars can you please reassure me it won't cost too much! That car seems to think I am a bottomless pit this year. Swanning around everywhere in a hired limo would be cheaper.

BGB - whinge away - that's what we're here for & yes I know exactly what you mean, except I dont even know what a macbook is :o if it's anything to do with facebook I dont wanna either. I've spent the last 10 years covering my tracks so 'old friends' cant locate me, the thought of being plastered all over the web horrifies me  that is - the web bit - quite happy to get plastered :D

Thank goodness, I had no idea what a macbook was either! Do I need one? I don't like to miss gadget buying opportunities:D . Glad I'm not the only one avoiding facebook as well. What a secretive group we are!

    Hi sarah,

glad to hear i'm not the only one who does the turn the radio up to drown out disturbing noise trick. Re the screeching noise I want to say 'fan belt slipping' but frankly I do petrol, air in tyres, oil dipsticking, screenwash filling & brake fluid topping up & that's it :o so dont believe a word I say . My solution to the grinding noise each time I turned right, was to go the long way round & turn left instead. I would go to a garage & smile prettily & casually ask whether anyone knows what it could be , then find a self employed mechanic through recommendation.

Please dont leave it though as it could be dangerous, it's worth having to use CC for repair to ensure safety, now I sound like my Dad  .

Errrm... Lets just ignore that bit :D. I suppose the first questions I should have asked are is it a petrol or diesel. Also what type of car is it? Please don't answer that with a colour....

Does it misfire at all? It would sound/feel like the engine has coughed. Or is it more like the engine is just ignoring you wanting to accelerate?

I still need to know a bit more but between the loss of engine power & the screeching noise it's beginning to sound like a worn or poorly tensioned drive belt or timing belt so you might be in luck, might just need to get it re-tensioned or at most a new belt fitted.

How simple & cheap that is depends on the car. I've had cars where I could get a new belt for a few quid & do the job myself in 10 minutes with just a basic socket set.

On the other hand my current car took me & my mechanic brother 2 hours to change it & we had to get it up on a lift & take out the front wheel arch to be able to get at all the pulleys it had to loop over.

It's a plan I like to call, "do nothing and it will go away." I like this plan so much- it requires no effort- that I have applied it to every area of my life. With hilarious consequences.

Have highlighted the only bits I am capable of, the rest is done by garage, (have to use the helpless female act for this one) housemates (and this one), RAC (and this one), dad (already knows it's not an act but the truth). *goes to add "can fix cars" to wish list and sees it already at number 7* (I have a very comprehensive list.) *ponders adding brown shoes*

I won't leave as I am afraid of causing an accident as I do use the motorway quite a bit, am hoping it will turn out to be less than £100 as can use current account for that, am determined not to use cc for anything other than emergencies, but car counts as emergency as I can't work without it. So annoying when I have just cleared it though. My next car is going to be a brand spanking new one, am sick of paying a fortune to keep this one on the road.
