Bleeding in pregnancy

Don't be angry with him. I think it's hard for a dad to know what to do or say. It's all very real to a mother going through this. We're the ones whose bodies have been changing, we're the ones who carry the baby around, and when things go wrong, we're the ones who have to deal with the physical side of things.
To watch a loved one go through this and know in your heart that there is not a damn thing you can do about it must be heratbreaking. He doesn't want to make you promises that end up empty but on the other hand, you shouldn't lose hope. You've not been told anything definite for sure and until you do, there isn't really anything right or wrong to say."One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0 -

Saw scan and saw 'sac' and 'yolk'. No heartbeat and am showing at 6 weeks pregnant.
Either baby has stopped growing at that stage or my period dates are wrong.
Scan in 9 days.
They said they can't condemn a pregnancy until it is 3mm so have to wait for scan.
No explanation for bleeding.
My question is:
If it is a miscarriage, why would the sac and all that be intact for 4/5 weeks. Or is that what happens?
oh dippy i'm so sorry you're going through this.
Miscarriages aren't all the same, and people don't tend to talk about them much either, so you don't often get to hear about details. I can give you the details of mine but it might not necessarily be the same for you, and of course I hope you are not miscarrying.
I miscarried my third pregnancy around 5 weeks after the baby had stopped growing (yes, i looked - and i also asked the doctor to estimate) and had no symptoms until the bleeding started. i was examined and told my cervix was closed and everything looked fine, but I couldn't have a scan until the next day (which was the date of my 12 week scan anyway). There were a few of us there in a separate waiting room on a different ward. The others had already had a scan a week or two earlier and been told that the heartbeat couldn't be seen, and then they came back for a repeat scan to see if anything had changed. sometimes people are not as far along as they expected, and things have changed when they go for the next scan and a heartbeat can be found, the sac is larger etc.
others will miscarry before the scan, and if they don't then drugs can be taken to contract the womb or sometimes a D and C is needed. I was told that before 12 weeks you can usually take pills, and a D and C isn't necessary. A lovely doctor went through it all with me during the night when she examined me.
I went home, with a scan arranged for the morning. i miscarried during the night. At my scan the sonographer was nice, and told me that i had miscarried, followed by 'the good news is your womb is empty' - that was really good news actually - not when just hours earlier i had been told my cervix was closed and things would probably be fine. but what she meant was i could go home and didn't need any further treatment - nothing had been retained.
i had never heard of a 'missed miscarriage' but it seemed to have happened to the others in the waiting room too.
Something i was not prepared for, and certainly wasn't ready for was having my baby described as 'products'. a very abrupt doctor asked if i had the 'products of conception' with me for testing. they send it away to check for molar pregnancy and variuos other things which the mother might need treatment for. i didn't know what this doctor meant when he asked me to hand over the products, and when he elaborated i still wasn't clear what 'products of conception' might be - i'd been awake all night cleaning up blood.
everything was pretty clinical with this doctor, all he wanted to know was did the scan show any retained products of conception - nice
sorry this is so long!! obviously i wish you the best, and hope you get a better outcome.'bad mothers club' member 13

It's funny, thinking back when the Dr checked my tummy last week he would have noticed that my tummy did not feel like it should for someone who is supposedly 10 weeks pregnant, I noticed that myself and wondered why it wasn't hard.
[/QUOTE]
At 10 weeks we would not expect to feel anything on palpation anyway - the uterus only becomes just palpable until 12 weeks usually, and so this would not have been an indication that things may not have been right - but could tie in with the dates being different to what you expected.
Thinking of you and hoping that all turns out well. Just to say as well, ask questions of your health care staff all the way, so that you are kept fully informed.0 -
Hi Dippy, i am so sorry to hear what you are going through. With my first pg i started getting pains and bled so went to a+e where i was transfered to the EPAU i had a scan but they could only see a sack i was told to go back the following week as it was probably too early to see (this was around 5 weeks pg) i went back every week for the next 5 weeks and they eventually decided it wasnt a viable pregnancy and i had to have a ERPC under general. Within a few months i was pg again and again i bled but no pains-i had an early scan but again they couldnt see anything so went back the following week and saw my ds's heartbeat for the first time-everything went fine and i now have a 23months old rat-bag. I recently found out i am pg again and due in march 09....again i have had a bleed but when i told the midwife at my anti-natel app she said they wouldnt scan me unless it was red (it was brown so i knew old blood) or i had severe pain, despite my history. So i am in limbo now waiting for a scan date.
I am sorry for waffling but wanted to let you know you are not on your own-it was only when i told friends and family about my miscarriage did i find out how common it actually was. If ever you need to talk just pm me. Huge hugs to you.(((((((((((())))))))))))))). Take care.xx0 -

Thanks
I am sorry you're in limbo too, mine was brown then red.. then brown.. then red.. now brown (sorry to any blokes reading this).
That's a bit wrong that they wont scan you again because its brown blood - I was offered a Scan on the basis that I was bleeding brown and an appointment made for as soon as they could (Saw Dr Thurs, appt made for Mon).
Hope your bleed stops and you keep well until your next scan:cool:0 -
Thanks, i only bled sat/sun over a week ago. The miswife just said if anything was going to happen there was nothing i could do to stop it, which i know is right but still a sympathetic ear wouldnt have gone amiss. I have a feeling everything will be fine when i eventually get my scan (fingers crossed.) Im lucky i only work 8.30am til 12.30 pm then pick ds up from nursery and he goes to bed til 4pm (that reminds me must go and wake him!!ooops!!), my dh is home around 4.30 so i dont have to do too much picking up-we just have cuddles on the sofa or bed instead. Take care of yourself and thank you.xx0

If it is a miscarriage then it's natures way of saying it wasn't to be and god wanted this one to be an angel.
If everything is ok then you just look after youself
Go easy on the old man, men find it very hard to deal with emotions at the best of time, coping with the unknown if even worse for them, give each other a big hug and tell him its from all of usLife is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?0 -
me too xx
olliesmummy i hope you get your scan soon. i suppose the staff see this every day but to the person experiencing the worry of a possible miscarriage it's a big deal - i remember wanting a scan NOW because i wanted to know if i was miscarrying, couldn't stand the waiting.
fingers crossed for you.'bad mothers club' member 13

Well the pain has come back and I've passed a huge clot which was horrible so I suppose that must be it?
Says on my card I only need to go back to hospital if the bleeding becomes heavier than a normal period or the pains aren't relieved by paracetamol. Thankfully my husband will be home in 15 minutes to cook the dinner for everyone.:cool:0
