be careful I have heard that washing your shoes in the machine can damage the adhesive that keeps the shoes together, also if you are a runner washing them can ruin the cushioning thingeyjig(technical term
in the heel of the shoe.

Wow, I'm amazed so many people know so much about whiffy shoes!
Some great ideas, and cheaper than the expensive sprays too. Thanks everyone.I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.
Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.0 -

Apparently the tea leaves absorb the smell...or something.

Hi
I've done a search on here but, apart from herbal tea bags, no ideas! I used to use "Gran's Remedy" - from Hawkshead - but they don't sell it any more and I can't find a seller in this country. Thought people here might have ideas how to reduce the smell from shoes and trainers, something lasting and something that eliminates rather than masks the smell. Bicarb? Anything else? Other chemicals? Gran's remedy claimed to kill off the bacteria that builds up in the warm, moist environment of a shoe.
Many thanks

Hi dunce,
We have a long thread on getting rid of smells from shoes that might help you so I'll merge your thread with it as it helps to keep all the suggestions together. As always the posts are listed in date order, so you'll need to read from the beginning to see all the replies.

One of the best things I've found is the Australian Bodycare Tea-Tree foot lotion. It comes in a green tube and I get it in my local chemists. If you apply some to your feet in the mornings, after you wash your feet, it really does stop your feet getting smelly during the day. I found that after I'd been using it for a while it stopped my shoes smelling too, maybe the tea tree stops the bacteria from breeding. It worked for me anyway ...0

Hi Pink winged - for some reason my search hadn't thrown up this thread. Thanks for merging, I'll give it a read through in the very near future.
Good idea GingerNM. I expect that it is the antiseptic properties that teat-tree is supposed to have. I might try that or maybe lavender as, if I recall correctly, that has similar antiseptic properties. Perhaps you are right and I should tackle the feet rather than the shoes! Still, the New Zealand 'Gran's Remedy' did work and it took less time, shame Hawkeshead stopped selling it. Perhaps the Bicard approach would be similar (and truly 'old-style').
Thanks for that
