Thanks SS, was beginning to panic as I thought I only had 4 days left! Now I can watch this board for another month to copy observe what others are doing as I haven't yet figured what to do next. :D:D

Well not long before we find out for certain if I'm wrong or not. :D

No need to panic as it's not as if you're locked into an AV once you install it. You could still install Avast or Antivir etc now and change back to AVG later. (Remembering to uninstall existing anti virus before installing new one).

Have been removing AVG8 on computers due to high number of false positives, and slowing down of some together with it becoming bloated software.

Have replaced AVG with AVAST.

I used to use AVG 7.5 and when they upgraded to 8.0 I switched to Avast as I don't like AVG 8.0 at all, it seems a lot slower

I have been keeping an eye on the threads regarding AVG8 and I think I have made a decision to move to Avast. I think someone mentioned Avira but if not giving e-mail protection will pass on that one.

Hopefully before 31 August I will uninstall AVG 7.5 and install Avast. I must say I like the ease of using AVG and never had a problem with 7.5 or the previous one. A colleague of mine has downloaded AVG and says all is OK. We both operate on XP rather than Vista.

If you are happy using AVG 7.5 then at least give AVG 8 a chance. I have installed it on a few different machines with no problems. If you don't want the link scanner functionality, simply run the installation with the parameters:
/REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSurf /REMOVE_FEATUREfea_AVG_SafeSearch

save the AVG Free installation file directly to disk C:\
uninstall AVG 7.5
Start, Run and type
C:\avg_free_stf_*.exe /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSurf /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSearch

There is no speed slow down and the user interface and silent updates are better.

Hi expresso

It was the speed thing that was worrying me - I don't want our systems to go slow!

I took the plunge and installed AVG 8 at the weekend and it seems to be working fine:T .

I was worried as there is a very mixed response on it. The link scanner is a new feature and will require extre resource to run it. I am wondering if it depends on the spec of the PC whether it will slow down or not. I have a duo core processor with cpu speeeds of 2.8 GHz and 1GB RAM.

It would be interesting to know what the PC specs are of others who have or have not had problems to see if it is simply a case of old lower spec PCs not being able to cope with the more resource intensive AVG 8;) .

If you run the installer and choose custom you can uncheck the annoying link scanner thing ;)

Wouldn't have a clue on spec. But XP and AVG was fine to begin with until recently.

Right click My Computer icon on your desktop then click properties and you should get the basic info on spec under the General Tab.
