If you are happy using AVG 7.5 then at least give AVG 8 a chance. I have installed it on a few different machines with no problems. If you don't want the link scanner functionality, simply run the installation with the parameters:
    /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSurf /REMOVE_FEATUREfea_AVG_SafeSearch

save the AVG Free installation file directly to disk C:\
    uninstall AVG 7.5
    Start, Run and type
    C:\avg_free_stf_*.exe /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSurf /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSearch

There is no speed slow down and the user interface and silent updates are better.

Is there a way to turn off the link scanner once installed as I always prefer the straight forward update/download install options. Would it be better to uninstall 7.5 before installing 8 and should you installed straight from download site or OK the save to harddrive.

Not keen on having the slow down as I only got a 1.2Ghz 750Mb laptop so no huge amoutn of resource available

The installed modules will still be there even if they are switched off, so it's better to not install them in the first place!

Yes uninstall and reboot before installing the new version.

and should you installed straight from download site or OK the save to harddrive.

Better to follow the instructions above and save it to your C: drive.

If installed as above, there is no slow down, just a new improved version 8 without the link scanner/safe surf nanny module. I installed version 8 on an 800Mhz machine only yesterday!

I have decide to install version 8, however is it advisable to complete the registration process were it asks you to agree to all the T&Cs which are as follows; -

    1. The Free AVG Software user (hereinafter referred to as "user")
acknowledges and agrees that AVG Technologies CZ, s.r.o., (hereinafter referred to as
"AVG Technologies") will, for the duration of the contractual relationship, process the user's personal information acquired to the extent in which the information is offered voluntarily by the user during the registration to copy the Free AVG Software, or by any other direct or indirect contact with the user; in particular the information concerning the user's first name, surname,
e-mail address, and the country of origin.

    2. The user agrees that AVG Technologies will process the user's personal
data, acquired in connection with the contractual relationship above, for the AVG Technologies marketing and trade purposes including the delivery of commercial announcements, and, to that extend, AVG Technologies may disclose such data to third parties/entities co-operating with AVG Technologies in the organization of marketing events. The agreement according to this Section may be withdrawn, at any time, by the user's explicit statement delivered to AVG Technologies. If the user withdraws its agreement with the personal data processing in accordance with this Section, AVG Technologies will continue to be authorized, on the basis of the applicable legal regulations, to process the user's personal data to the remaining extent not affected by such disagreement.

    3. In processing personal data, AVG Technologies agrees to hold the user
harmless regarding the user's rights, and to take any available measures as may be needed to avoid any unauthorized or accidental access to the users' personal data, its change, destruction or loss, unauthorized transfers, or its other unauthorized processing or other misuse. In the event that the user's personal data is handed over to third subjects, AVG Technologies agrees to conclude an agreement on personal data processing with such subjects under which third subjects will give guarantees concerning the technical and organizational provision of personal data protection within the authority of Act No. 101/2000 Coll.

    4. The user acknowledges that the requirement to provide personal
    data
to AVG Technologies does not arise from the above mentioned Act; however, without the provision thereof, AVG Technologies cannot provide some specific services to the user.

    5. The user shall have the right to receive information about the
user's personal data processed by AVG Technologies, under the conditions set forth by the applicable legal regulations, in particular by Act No.
101/2000 Coll. If, in the processing of the user's personal data, any legal regulation is breached, the user shall have the right to seek remediation in a manner set forth therein.

    6. The agreement of the personal data processing is given for
the period of duration of the License Agreement on Use of a Free AVG Software Version, but has a minimal duration of no less than 10 years.
The user's agreement with the processing of the personal data may be withdrawn at any time by a statement of the user in writing delivered to
    AVG Technologies.

    7. The user hereby states that he/she is fully able to take legal
actions, and the user grants freely and solemnly, definitely and comprehensibly its agreement with the personal data processing,
including his/her consent to the delivery of trade notices.

    8. AVG Technologies and the user each acknowledge and agree that their
mutual legal relationship shall be governed by the rule of law of the Czech Republic, in particular by Act No. 101/2000 Coll., on Personal Data Protection, as amended by Act No. 480/2004 Coll., on Particular
    Services in Information Society.

    9. AVG Technologies CZ, s.r.o., the company duly organized and registered in
accordance with the Czech law maintains an updated database of the Free AVG Software users containing the personal data of the users. Such data is processed by AVG Technologies in accordance with the applicable legal regulations (in particular with Act No. 101/2000 Coll., on Personal Data Protection, as amended), for the purposes of providing the services which are the subject of the AVG Technologies activity, and for the purpose of the AVG Technologies marketing and trade activities.

I can't remember, I have looked through various files I have with reference details and can find nothing to say I did so, but that does not mean I did.

Is there any advantage to agreeing other than being able to take part in debates in their forum?

They seem to want you to agree to a lot of stuff and all seems to be under Czech law!

Can't be as bad as "Safari for Windows" EULA which says you are not allowed to use it on anything other than an Apple computer.

Although they've probably updated it since.

Which doesn't actually answer my question!

Should I just ignore registration, as I think I could register later if required?
