As superscraper has said, the underscores are deliberate (spaces were never mentioned) and if you look at the downloaded file when you copy it to the C:\ drive it will be something like: avg_free_stf_en_8_138a1332.exe so self explanatory really! Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

AVG 8 has been on my computer for a couple of weeks now and hasn't caused me too many problems. I agree that it is a bit bloated in comparison with it's predecessor, however my computer is four years old and doesn't have too much trouble running it at all.No Unapproved or Personal links in signatures please - FT30

derrick If you look in the screen where you shedule the scan at the botton there is a tick box called Enable this task. Click in this box to remove the tick and the schedule scan is completely disabled. That's what I did and then scan manually at my convenience about once per week.
Thanks, have done that, I thought that tick was to enable the task set, hadn't realised it was also to disable scan completelyDon`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0 -
I have XP and recently downloaded AVG free 8.0 after uninstalling 7.5 version.I seem to have a problem with starting up my computer as it takes ages then up comes a pop up saying the update manager is unable to connect.I get my desktop then and can connect to say google and can update AVG.What does anyone think is going wrong and what can I do to speed things up?"Sometimes life sucks....but the alternative is unacceptable."0

Is it set to scan at bootup? If so disable the scan and scan manually or change the scheduled scan time. Is it connected via wireless? i.e. your connection has not established when AVG tries to update. Change the scheduled update time to a time after your PC is normally on. Use msconfig to see what is in the startup tab. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

I don't really see the point having it scan at every boot, so you can disable that and scan yourself manually when required. Go to Tools, Advanced, Schedules, Scheduled scan and Program update schedule to configure the settings.
Start, Run, msconfig, The Start up tab shows what is starting up, when you boot up the system. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

It was the speed thing that was worrying me - I don't want our systems to go slow!

Going to give this a go at the weekend. Just wanted to check couple of things. I've got the AVG download saved onto pendrive at present and going to drag and drop striaght onto the hard-drive, or can I install from the pendrive by simply replacing C:\ with E:\ at the beginning
Do I unstall 7.5 before doing the run bit (apoligise if this has been spelt out somewhere else but read so many of these links"0) or simply install over 7.5.
Once I have (hopefully succesfully) installed version 8 can I then transfer the downloaded file to the download folder I keep on the computer.
If I install this under "administartor" I use it will be available to all users fo the computer (ie the kids) under there own log ins. I know 7.5 is.
Many thanks for all the help so far. Hopefully my next post will be along the lines of "wow its worked and aint it great!"0 -
Still sat on v7.5 here, call me a ludite but where softwares concerned I tend to work on a "if it ain't broke, don't try to fix it" basis at least when it comes to upgrading to new, less well tried apps. *shrug*
Shouldn't you still be using DOS then?"She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"
