being a childrens nurse for years  I am an expert on nits ;D

the louse lays her eggs on the root of the hair   the further down the hair shaft the egg   the longer the lice have been there

the nit is the egg    this is like a pear drop  shaped pearly dot on the hair shaft  that is hard to pull off

from when the louse lays her eggs the nits take 10 days to hatch out into lice and only a few more days before they start laying eggs themselves.

doesnt matter if hair is short or long  the lice live on the scalp  not down the hair shafts much they feed on the scalp by sucking blood,   a simple way of looking for the nits is behind the ears   just flick through the hair there and if you see those pearly white drops stuck to the hair

    they got em!!

mayonaise is a good lice killer by the way

when all are removed and dead

rinse the hair in vinegar  brown or white solution  this loosens the old nit cases stuck to the hair

you must repeat the treatment again 7 days later to make sure you got all the littel buggers

    Ive always said

if everyone in britain tonight washed their hair in nit shampoo and agan next week

    no more head lice ;D

it would also be a big thing if the school could organise a sunday night or sat night head wash en masse for all pupils

My kids school has them all the time. At one stage doctors were advising to use conditioner (and a nit comb) as the potions to get rid of them constantly have to change as the lice adapt to it. We use conditioner/comb every wash (cheap supermarket own brands) and that keeps them at bay. At least we don't have the situation like when my daughter said her head wasn't itchy but when I insisted on using the comb we counted 250 before stopping counting!!!! ::) It's cheaper to use conditioner than those expensive potions (as you probably would use it anyway). Kids need to be told how trendy a shaved head is (including girls especially) - that helps!! Also my son puts so much wax and gel on his hair that nothing would survive there!!! :D

the conditioner and comb technique isnt to kill them its to get them out of the hair

you then have to use the treatment to kill the straglers or youll have them constantly

an infestation of that amount would make your child ill and listless as they start to infect the scalp and back of neck glands

I would recomend you treat the child then again in 7 days and again in 14 days to make sure theyre all gone

    ;D

A natural alternative to killing head lice is to use mayonaise. Cover the entire scalp and hair with mayonaise, cover with plastic wrap and leave on about half an hour. Shampoo and remove all the nits or eggs.

    when my daughter ( who has long hair to her bum) had nit, I treated her with;

    15 drops eucalyptus oil
    15 drops teatree oil
    6oz sunflower oil/olive oil
leave on for 10 mins, repeat the next day, & then in a weeks time. Got rid of all the nits. Give it a go. :)
