Other half received a reply to his letter of 27th Dec to Customer Services today, confirming his incentive payment was paid 12th Dec and apologising for the delay and messing about. Fair enough apology - but no explanation for the delay! He's happy he's finally got it after running the account according to the terms and conditions but we are confused as to the actual problem. Nevermind.

I wrote to the Co-op on 5th January and haven't received a reply. How long should I wait before I kick up a fuss?

I think you've waited long enough. Get back in touch and send it Recorded Delivery.

Did you use the same address that I used?

Yes I did. I hate phoning to complain because I get worked up and end up very upset. I much prefer doing things by email or letter.

Although they may have a back-log to get through, they should have sent you notification that they have received your complaint by now.

I'd also recommend writing again, just do a covering letter for your original letter stating you wrote to them regarding (subject of complaint) on (date you dated the original letter), you still haven't heard anything back from them and would appreciate a response.
Enclose a copy of the original letter so you don't have to re-do it all and they can see what you are referring to.

I'd also recommend sending this one Recorded.

Thanks everyone for your help and comments, the money arrived in my account today, no phone call or letter just the money.

    UPDATE 21/1/09

I received a letter today which I found both patronising and insulting. Amongst other things it said my account did not meet the necessary criteria but they have agreed to credit the £100. I am not sure what criteria I didnt meet as I paid in between £800 and £1000 pm for 4 months, paid bills and wrote a couple of cheques.

I am definitely not staying with them now so could anyone tell me the best way to close this account.

In the terms and conditions of the account it gives you a phone number and address for closing the account. They need the card and cheque book returning to them (cut into pieces) before the account is classed as closed. An alternative way would be to call into a branch with the card and cheque book and request to close the account.

Also, it sounds like they're not sure of their terms and conditions if they say you haven't met the criteria and yet have agreed to pay you the incentive! Surely if they could state you had not met the T&Cs they just would not pay the incentive? Why the double standard??!
  • Have just tried chasing these idiots again as I'm still waiting for my money, this time the story (3rd different one in 3 calls) is that you only get the money if you opened in branch and not if you opened by the phone. Told them I confirmed numerous times with them that I would get the money by opening over the phone before I went through with the application and they said they would look into it but they paid out all the incentives in December.

I'm not going to give up until I get the money however the minute I do I'll be closing both my accounts with them as they are clearly morons who will say any old rubbish to firstly get you to open the account, and then to get you off the phone when you ring up to complain about being lied to.
  • Both me and my wife have now received the bonus into each of our accounts. Thanks to a letter i sent about 3 weeks ago, courtesy of uzubairu. What a struggle that was though. A+L was a much easier £150 for us both anyway lol.

P.S thats the new telly paid for anyways.

You may find the £15 payment is a Service Level Guarentee payment for making a mistake relating to opening an account - see here http://www.co-operativebank.co.uk/servlet/Satellite/1193206375657,CFSweb/Page/Bank-CustomerServices
I've found the Co-op bank to be very helpful over the 13 years I've been with them, and their customer services have been excellent for me.

Thak you for this info, I went onto the website and printed off their guarantee, underlined the £15 bit and sent another letter. I got a letter the other day saying my account had been credited with £15. yaay!!
