Only after a year. then yes it is a 50p a day fee so it wouldn't be good if you where only a bit overdrawn but not actually that bad if you where a grand or so overdrawn.

I am having trouble applying, it asks for credit card details and I don't have one.

You just say "no" you don't have one then. IIRC there are yes no radio buttons.
  • Hi,
I currently have a nationwide flex current account as does my girlfriend. We also have a joint nationwide flex account.

Does anyone know if we would be able to claim £100 for each account if we switched all three accounts? (also could we use the refer a friend bonus aswell)

    Cheers

    Hi all,

I've just been approved for one of these accounts, but I’m a bit concerned that my DD's will be switched over before I’ve sorted out switching my salary (I didn’t choose the option for them to sort my salary) and that I wont be in control of where my DD's are coming from.

I rang their customer service and the guy said "Don’t worry, we wont move your DD's for about 4 weeks or so" but he couldn't give me an exact date, so he suggested "Keeping money in both accounts, just in case"

This seems a bit impractical to me, I don’t have enough spare cash to be able to put enough to pay my mortgage in both accounts. I do have fairly big overdraft limits on both accounts to cover it, so my mortgage / other DD's would get paid, but it seems a lot of fuss and could cost me money in overdraft interest on my HSBC account.

Can someone reassure me that the switching process is in fact quite smooth?

    Cheers!

Switch your salary once your direct debits have been moved.
You get an interest free overdraft with the new account, so while your salary is going in to HSBC you shouldn't get into problems on either accounts.
Once the direct debits have come out of the A&L account (paid from overdraft) transfer the money from HSBC to cover them.

The problem you may face, though, is being able to work out at any one time how much money you have.

Can't do that, I'm afraid. When we switched from Abbey to Halifax the whole process was a nightmare.
But just think about the £100 you get, plus the interest free overdraft. That's got to be worth a fair bit of hassle, I reckon.

Default is usually £250 unless you transfer your salary payment over. And you have to pay in a min of £500 each month otherwise they charge £5. Easy to get round, transfer £500 from one account, and then back again.
  • Martin (and A&L!!!) also says the overdraft is 0%. Correct, but the small print also says that they charge a 50ppd (max £5 pm)"Overdraft Usage Fee", so the 0% is NOT cheap. Advantages outweigh the disadvantages though !!!

After 12 months, the 0% overdraft continues but a usage fee of 50p a day (up to £5 a month) applies if you use the arranged overdraft.
We guarantee that you will not have to pay any fees while you are using this service, even if you go over your overdraft limit.

Hope this helps. It is from the A&L website - http://www.alliance-leicester.co.uk/current-accounts/premier-direct-current-account.aspx
