    Hi,

I have a 2005 Scenic Megane 1.5 dci. I've experienced quite a few problems regarding the electrics on this car, including a £400 bill for faulty windows, something I will admit Renault themselves confirmed was a common fault but only managed to meet me half way with the cost of putting it right.
My latest problem is the electric petrol range on the dash - on 3 occasions now Ive started the car the morning after the night before knowing that around 250 miles should be showing, however on all occasions the range meter has counted down to zero which worries me or shows less than 50 miles which is baffling me??
Im seriously considering changing this car as I've spent around £850 in a couple of years on work and parts including £120 on a wiper arm.
Does anyone have any ideas on the problems with the petrol gauge issue? If it is something small thats causing this then i might consider keeping the car.... anything too expensive and its going.
    Thanks

my suggestion to save yourself money is to headover to renaultforums.co.uk, and search the sub forum ELECTRICALS, there are picture guids on common problem fixes places to buy meterial or mobile renault specialists in certain area that will discount for forum members.

The problem on the dashboard is how mine started off, ie resetting to zero and gradually it all went. The consideration you need to be aware of is that Renault said on Watchdog that they would replace the unit for £100 and I suspect yours will go eventually, maybe days rather than weeks. I also had problems with the windows, and eventually they started replacing the mechanism for £10 as I had 5 of them go, ie one of them went twice, and the £10 was so that it was guaranteed!! I would certainly get onto Renault again. Needless to say, I got rid of my Scenic last year and got the new CMax, which I am pleased with so far, although have had problems on 2 occasions with windows dropping down, albeit they went up again without having to have any work done on them. But still worrying.
  • renault have started to improve from 2006 onwards, the reputation they have like many other manufacturers sticks, and alot of people will knock them down. i did at one point but have started to see the improvements they have made.
  • Thanks for the feedback Lymmbo; If I take it to the dealer will they honour the £100 charge that was mentioned on watchdog? Might be a cheaper option for now????

Hi, just wondered if everyone who got a new instrument panel with Renault ended up with zero mileage. They told me it is illegal to put the correct mileage on the new panel and I'll just have to keep the receipt with it on for if/when I sell the car? (Btw I paid £150 as the car is 8 years old)

Yes, I had to have ours set to zero. When I traded it in, the garage said it would lose value due to this, which I was not happy about, but nothing I could do about it. Obviously I was not trading in to a Renault garage!!! Once bitten twice shy!
  • I've always maintained my vehicles myself until buying my grand scenic dci 2, seems to do anything you need a lift and drop subframe all the time...... mind you trouble free motoring for 4 years only needed new tyres, pads, 1 window mech, 1 control arm, until recently when turbo started making unusual noises, so replaced that yesterday and as if by magic the dash is blank.... Doh.... Having removed the 'Johnson controls' dash instrument panel, I have found a button on the back, any one know what this does? Is it a safety circuit reset? I also own a Volvo tdi, and it is so much easier to aquire this kind of info for my Volvo compared to Renault. Are they still doing the lower cost replacement for the dash?

I once had a BMW 320ise, and the batteries in the dash instrument panel leaked and caused a small fire in the unit, I couldn't turn the car off as it shorted a circuit, so had to stall engine to turn off and jump out and pull the connections off the car battery rather quickly, so I suppose at least I haven't been smoked out this time.

I too walked upto my Scenic to find a window completely open. I replaced the mechanism myself. The difference is, the genuine Renault window mechanism has plastic parts that attach to the glass to control it's movement, whereas the aftermarket parts are metal and so far have not broken again.

I also had window problems, they replaced a regulator under this scheme which I wrote about then and it broke after 12 months and then the car was over 7 years old so they won't look at it again. Surely it must be a wiring fault so next time I take it the the local french car mechanic I will ask him to take a look. He tells me that 04-06 were bad years for the scenic. Mine also had to go in a few years ago for reprogramming to prevent it from braking when it feels like it, apparently one renault did this so they reprogrammed them all :/
