Well you have to read my guide and do your research.
Look at the areas that are available on Priceline and then look at BB and BFT for previous hotels won.
Look at any reviews to see if there are any real dumps and if possible avoid that star level or area.
Look at other sites to see if you can grab a "normal" bargain or at least see what the prices are for a conventional booking.
The higher star level you go the more the saving so TBHO I'd always start at 4-5* as these places are rarely dumps.
Happy bidding:D0 -
Hi, I'm off to New York 4th - 8th December with my OH. I've been before, he hasn't. Last time I stayed at the Ramada New Yorker (it was 2007 when they had the offer, if you found it cheaper you got 1st night free), and had a fab time. I also stayed 2 nights in the Radisson Lexington, which wasn't a patch on the Ramada (did that through Priceline and got a bargain).
Now, my dilemma. I'd love to go back to the New Yorker, and am tracking the prices but it's showing about £980 for the 4 nights. I'm browsing Better Bidding, and am going to bid on priceline tonight... I think...:) but.... I keep thinking, if I bid on 3* Madison Square Garden and I don't get the New Yorker, I'll be sick, so should I just go totally mad and try for a 5* somewhere else and try for a bargain? I'm talking myself round in circles. (I know you can't answer this for me, but just want to throw it out there....)!
thanks
Why? May be a complete different experience next time.;)
Be brave and try another area or at least be prepared for another hotel.
I would always go back to the Hyatt NJ as it's a steal and the view is to die for.
Does Hotwire ever have the New Yorker, because that's the only sure fire way (99% chance) of getting it through the "opaque" sites0 -

thanks Blindman. Not sure, there's a 3 1/2* with all the right attributes on hotwire but it's still over 300$
Hyatt NJ is 1150$ for my dates (Not priceline).... will check it out. I think you're right, you should never go back and I should try something different;). I was on 35th floor in New Yorker though.... and it was fab. Only got as far as 12th in the Radisson and there was no view at all...:(Bern :j0 -

I am incredibly fussy when it comes to hotels (and most other things), but I actually bid for the 3* MSG zone rather most of the 4*+ zones. All of the reported hotels for that zone are very good, at least on a par with the New Yorker. I stayed at the Four Points Midtown in July and honestly could not fault it.

thanks for that DMG. The Hyatt looks lovely, but I want to be close to everything! Ok... tonight I will go for 3* MSG and hope for the best...Bern :j0 -

Make sure you know
What your max bid will be
Which areas you can have Free rebids (if any)
Which hotels you are likely to get.
Good luck.
last question (honest;)).
If I'm going for 4 nights, would I bid for all four or would you (that is me) go for 1 night to see where I get?(sorry:o)Bern :j0 -

The question is, are you willing to move around during your stay? I tend to move hotels every 2/3 nights as I get bored very quickly, but for some they like the security of being in one place.
Don't be afraid to leave your bidding for another month or so, New York is very popular but also has masses of hotel rooms - in my experience, the best bargains are to be had much closer to your dates.Gone ... or have I?0
