Now why didn't I plant Charlotte as my salad spuds :wall: I love those spuds too and they were on my shortlist but didn't see any at the local garden centre so didn't go looking any further afield

I wonder whether we can run up a shortlist of the best yielding varieties people have had this year please? :D

I'm certainly not going to bother with pink apple fir again after this year's disastrous results, although I do still have several plants in the ground but I'd have thought they'd be ready by now having been in the ground since late March

I've still got cara and rooster to harvest yet though ;)

Has anyone had any luck with the Emerald Vale ones? I never got round to putting mine in the ground in spring so going to try this week for winter/xmas spuds :D

    Hi Chameleon,

Traditionally you wouldn't lift a Pink Fir Apple until around October time so if you still have some plants left in the ground be patient (I know it's hard!!) you honestly won't be disappointed with your harvest in October.
As for the Vales Emerald we are just eating them now and I must say I'm really impressed by them OH dug them up so can't say how much we got but suffice to say I won't need to dig up any more potatoes for a few weeks now :D

Thanks, I didn't know that being a newbie potato grower ;)

I assumed that as they'd flowered already then that was the time to harvest them. Having said that, my cara's also flowered several weeks ago but I've noticed they are starting to flower again so maybe I was just too impatient to dig them up :rotfl:

I still have several pink fir apple's in the ground so will do as you suggest and leave them until October :D

I'm hoping for some heavy rain this weekend (only drizzled on and off the last couple of days  ) to get some moisture into the soil so I can get the Emerald Vales in the ground next week. It's so dry it's almost like dust at the moment!

I did three tubs/bags each with one potato in, I cannot remember the variety

tub one 1lb 4oz - the soil was really dry and there where lots of undeveloped potatoes, lesson number one make sure your potatoes have enough to drink!!

Well as you can see I left the other for two more weeks and watered like mad, the manic downpours we've had in the last couple of days probably helped as well. First yield (from one see potato) was 10oz  and the second a whopping 2lbs 10oz, more than the other two put together, the only thing I can think of is because the other two were grown in black garden sacks, I don't think they got as much rain so tubs is the way to go for me by the looks of it.

Found the variety type too - it was Witchhill

My main crop ones are maris piper (I think) - again courtesy of poundland. I'm waiting to finish eating the earlies before I get my firkling fingers out again. Watch this space.
(Whatever my earlies were, they were better eaten small, as unless I steam them, I'm now finding they're boiling into the water.)

I'm almost too scared to go dig up some of my cara's but I could really do with some some for dinner tomorrow :rotfl:
