Dug the rest of the vale emmerald from 2 compost bags i put 2 seed spuds in each bag gave me 5 smallish spuds and 4 spuds in others 2lb 3oz all together not impressed with growing them in bags.

The thing I've found with growing spuds in bags (and pots) is that they're never as wet as you you think they are.

Spuds need plenty of water once the tubers are growing, and obviously if they're in bags or pots they can't get it from the ground. When I watered them (the first time I grew spuds in bags/pots) I thought they were getting really soaked, but it was only really the top of the bag that was getting wet, none of the water was reaching the bottom of the bag, and that was with 10 litres or so of water being put on them !

This year I made a conscious effort to make sure that they were getting enough water, and had much better results. About 15lb of 'Charlotte' salad potatoes per bag.

So, lack of water was probably the reason for you only having a few spuds. Don't give up on growing them in bags, you'll have a better crop next year.

As a side note, my kids love getting the spuds out of the bags. They get almost a whole arm into the sacks and have areal good delve around !

Yes. Just change the compost. You can use the old compost to grow carrots in pots, or just spread it on a flower/veg bed.

  • a good way of growing cheap potatoes is by letting one sprout in your kitchen and then plant in a bucket i did this and have grown enough for quite a few meals . it saves money by not having to buy the potatoes especially to plant.
i have eaten them all now had i found this thread before i would have proudly weighed and displayed them i am ever so proud

I've lifted 1/2 of my Maris piper and I've had 10lb of so far and got another 8 plants left to lift.
Also 12lb of Maris peer. I've got two rows of unknown (they were spuds that grew sprouts in the cupboard so planted them.

Most of them were suffering from spliting :( but still tasted nice!
