Hi, when you bough your TV licence there was a Ref. number. I hope you wrote it down somewere together with the date on which you payed.
If oficer come and you open the door, give him that - they should be able to track that you have Tv licence.
I had the problem when i moved house - i did informed them by the web site( they dont send new TV licence with the new address). So, that is how i sorted it.
    Hope that helps!

In my case I think they eventually understood after a couple of years what I originally told them when I cancelled my DD. When I moved back with my parents my dad already had a licence in his name. But TVLA were still insisting I needed to get a licence. I presume they stopped sending the letters when they tried to take it further but couldn't because there's already a licence for the house (just in another person's name). Not had anything in a long time now so I consider it resolved. But I now see how difficult it is to get the TVLA to understand anything other than paying a licence in your name. They don't really seem to listen, and at least I had in black and white an actual existing TV licence I could produce, I wasn't trying to claim I had no TV or didn't watch it. So I can only imagine how much hassle it is for those without a TV. I can't think of any other circumstance in life where NOT having something leads to so much harrassment.

Totally agree with this. TVLA ONLY stops if there is a licence for an address. They will NEVER stop harassing you if their database shows there is no licence for an address.

I had to (and continue to) deal with the TVLA harassment. I first paid for a licence but the signal was so bad that I couldn't watch or record live TV anyways.

One of my friends said you don't need a licence. I stopped paying and all hell broke loose.

I receive lots of threatening letters and TVLA people knocking on my door, etc. It was very intimidating. At one point I thought I might as well pay them but then after research, I realised TVLA just use threats to scare people.

It is pretty amazing how much misinformation TVLA sends out regarding its "police" powers (which it has nothing. It is just a private company.) and the rights of citizens (which they have LOTS).

And it doesn't help that people spread their own misinformation as well. In the last couple of weeks I've seen at least a couple of posts on the forum of people saying you still need a licence just to listen to the radio!!! They got rid of the radio licence before I was even born AFAIK so some of these "facts" seem to propogate for decades.

This is so right. Even if you miss your payment to your bank or other company, that company doesn't come full force with PACE cautions, "authority to send enforcements to your door", etc etc.

Here, we have to prove to TVLA we are NOT doing something illegal, it is amazing...

It is a basic principle of English law that you are innocent until proven guilty, the TVLA appear to have forgotten this, as far as they are concerned they assume you are guilty and you have to prove yourself innocent.

I'm in the same situation as you, our household has a license, family tv went on the blink so I ordered a new one of the internet, few weeks later get a letter saying I need a license for my address - um if they did their job right they'll see our house is licensed. Now if I want to sort this out I need to spend my cash to phone them, no thanks.

ok i feel this is getting slightly out of hand i can asure you i do know exactly what i am talking about i worked there as a customer service advisor and as a training officer.

TVL is extremely complexed with certain aspecs of the law regrading it which is where the main problem is i ued to be the same alot of people i used to think if you had a tv you needed a licence as simple as that, but once i worked there i understand the different reasons whether you do or dont need a licence.

I am not saying i do agree with TV licences i dont think we should have to pay it, but at the end of the day we do and there is nothing we can do about it. what i was tryin to do is explain the processes so that people understand the reason behind why certain thinks happen to give you a better understand, but like 75% of the calls i used to take you obviously think you know more than i do, even though i received extensive training on the laws.

I'm sure as with any companies people have bad experiences with certain people ie people being rude etc but you will get this with any company but i can guarantee i am not one of those people.

since you have not replied to my questions I will leave it there ;) Its not a complex issue despite you claiming it is!

Most of what you have said is alot of rubbish! Now to the 25% of yr calls that knew what they were talking about, sounds like the posts on here, so did you ever knock on doors Bella?
