TV licence letter (uhoh)

Hi all

First of all, mea culpa, I have lived with my gf for a year in our flat without a TV licence.

Today we received a letter saying an officer is going to come round soon (the first correspondence we have had from them). I have just been on the TV Licensing website and bought a TV licence. It says they send them out within 10 days, which may or may not be after the officer comes.

Do you think this is enough to cover our asses? I realise we were wrong not to have one, but getting one is pretty much the only thing we could do to make the situation better.

What do you guys think? Any experience of this?

They need to catch you with the TV switched on in and no TV licence in order to have any hope of getting a prosecution. As you now have a TV licence, the visit may not even take place (the letter has had the desired effect of making you buy a licence).

You don't have to let them in if they call. They have to find you using the equipment unlicenced for the purpose of recieving broadcasts (not for example a de-tuned set used just for playing video games or something like that).

Now you have purchased one you will be on their database as owning a licence; so I doubt you will even be called. Even if they do, just show them a print-out of the proof of purchase from the web-site - and say you are waiting for the paper copy to come through. They shouldn't even put a foot over the threshold.

They drive me crazy. I don't own a TV and the amount of rubbish I get from them is untrue; as I obviously must have a TV set. Never had a visit from them though. I wouldn't worry, TBH.

At every property I've lived at for the last 3 years I have received letters stating that I don't have a TV licence (I do, I always update to the new address and pay by dd every month). They become increasingly more threatening but nobody has ever come round to visit or check anything.

I have a friend whose family has never paid for a Licence but keep a blank form in the house. Whenever the property is visited they tell the agents that they've just moved in and they've got the form ready and waiting. No more questions asked.

I often think that if they're going to keep sending me threatening letters anyway I might as well save myself the £11 a month and stop paying.

Normally I can easily handle most situations but I am ashamed to say that a few months ago I allowed the Tv licensing people to get to me. It just so happened to be the first anniversary of my mothers death and I called round to pick up mail from her house (and have a quiet moment). In amongst the mail was a letter from the TV licensing people threatening my mother that she would be interviewed under caution for failing to have a license. Up until that point I had previously responded to their letters courteously including sending them a copy of my mother death certificate.

This letter got to me so I phoned them up and talked to some poor retard obviously incapable of getting a job anywhere else. I asked if he could give me at least 24 hours notice of the interview to give me time to dig my mother up and present her. The idiot at the other end of the phone just didn't get it and insisted my mother should get a TV license. I told him to turn on his recording equipment and then tolld him to F*** off and suggested he take my mother to court before hanging up. I suspect in another few months they will send out another threatening letter which I will ignore (since I am neither the addressee nor the occupier therefore I will simply return as 'not known at this address').

No-one condones unlicensed viewing or law breaking but those who genuinely don't have a licence are having a rough time of it.
