At the end of the day....if you have a tv that recieves tv channels...wether they are english or foreign, you have to have a licence....wether you like it or not!!! its the law...not some rule made up by capita or tv licensing....its agains the law not to have one!!
And, those who may have not been visited by an enforcement officer (yet) dusnt mean you never will!!
You can say the letters are worded harsh or threatening....but its only so people will realise the seriousness of what they're doing - BREAKING THE LAW!
And...if you say you've no TV....then you won't mind letting the officers in to confirm this....then there'll be no more harrassment!! simple!!
I, aswell as bella 2121 have worked for tvl.....and have been abused on the phones by people who only ring for a moan....get over it!!
If u dont wanna pay for a licence, then dont....but you will eventually get visited......and may go to court.....and believe me there are thousands and thousands of people that DO go to court each week and DO get fined....!!
Oh, and neil.....search warrants do get granted quite often.....and if they end up in court....the people are fined alot more money!!!!!

you must be related to bella pasta ;) sorry just a joke, so much mis information again, so what was the actual  average fine for last year then?

Bella and Pebbles, here is a link that you should read up on:

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/foi/docs/responses_tvlicence.shtml

It is also very funny to see that many responses from TVL on the FOI requests are of the "we are withholding this information" type.

Bella and Pebbles - Please realise that it is not just one letter but several a year and having been someone who lived in an isolated situation, the idea of someone sneaking around the place is scary..........especially when you have done nothing wrong. I eventually bought a TV, only in order to watch videos and felt compelled to get a licence. It was a relief that the letters stopped coming........I guess that makes me stupid but really you have to be on the receiving end to understand.
Unfortunately your refusal to relate to the point of view of those like me, only seems to illustrate how aggressive this system is.

For someone that claims to have worked for TVL that is completely incorrect.

You can have as many TV's as you wish but only need a licence if you watch live broadcasts, get your facts right before making such statements.

    Watch or record them.

A little pedantic maybe, but I don't want to give someone the impression that they can time delay it by recording to a PVR and thus get around the necessity to own a license.
They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it

i have to say i do not know 1 person who does not own a TV, in this day and age it is the minority who do not have a TV,

Not to be too flippant but so what? Anecdotal evidence doesn't really mean that it can be extrapolated in any meaningful way. I know people personally that don't have a TV and have never had one. I know people that used to have TVs and got rid and I know people that have TVs but genuinely only use them for DVDs, consoles etc. Why is the onus on them to prove they don't need a license?

As for informing the TVLA that's absolute rubbish, I know first hand that no matter what you tell them you can still get threatening letters for an awful long time afterwards. In my case it was a couple of years and only after continually ignoring them did they eventually stop.

like i said i'm sure there are more things in todays society to be afraid of than gettin a letter, i can asure you vunerable people are not "targeted", and i think you are unfair to say that i worked there for over 3 years and treated everyone with dignity and respect which i can tell you i did not receive the same treatment back i was subjected to extremely abusive language personal insults from people just ringing up for no other reason than to be abusive.

Well I've seen the video of that disabled guy who was physically assaulted by a TVLA person so even taking you at your word maybe as much as people without a TV are "in a minority" maybe the same can be said of nice, respectful TVLA employees. I didn't find them particularly nice personally when I last contacted them about cancelling my DD, and although I have and watch TV I do have it covered by a valid licence. But apparently once you pay for a licence they want you paying a licence personally in your name forever (hence the threatening letters I kept getting).

ok i feel this is getting slightly out of hand i can asure you i do know exactly what i am talking about i worked there as a customer service advisor and as a training officer.

TVL is extremely complexed with certain aspecs of the law regrading it which is where the main problem is i ued to be the same alot of people i used to think if you had a tv you needed a licence as simple as that, but once i worked there i understand the different reasons whether you do or dont need a licence.

I am not saying i do agree with TV licences i dont think we should have to pay it, but at the end of the day we do and there is nothing we can do about it. what i was tryin to do is explain the processes so that people understand the reason behind why certain thinks happen to give you a better understand, but like 75% of the calls i used to take you obviously think you know more than i do, even though i received extensive training on the laws.

I'm sure as with any companies people have bad experiences with certain people ie people being rude etc but you will get this with any company but i can guarantee i am not one of those people.

KILL BILL - if you are knowingly breaking the law, it's never a good idea to boast about it in public. At the end of the day, you can't pick and choose what laws to observe. If a burglar broke into your house and stole your TV, because he chose not to observe the laws relating to theft/burglary, would that be ok with you?

But only IF you need a licence and not everyone does. I think it's the treatment if you genuinely don't need a licence which is rather worrying. In my case what was I meant to do, buy a second licence? Nothing I did stopped the letters I got except eventually just ignoring them. If you need a licence then definitely you should buy one but I can't understand this presumption that you have to prove you don't need one.
