Which mattress? (merged threads)

On a slatted base you may be better of with an open coil mattress anyway, as the pocket spring can push through the gaps in the slats if more than about 2/3".
Technically a non-turn mattress you are halving the life of the mattress before you've even started, and thats usually how they can do them cheaper as they use half the materials.
FWIW, i'd stick with the open coil if that's all your budget will allow for now, and then maybe invest in a pocket sprung memory foam one (hopefully quite) a few years down the line. It's better to have a mattress that does what it's supposed to well, than a compromise on quality to try and get the 'better' spec.
Tim will be able to comment more on the eBay one, but doubt the review will be great as it's non-turn and he wont ever recommend those...:A Luke 6:38 :AThe above post is either from personal experience or is my opinion based on the person God has made me and the way I understand things. thanks Titherev,
With regards to open coil mattresses is there anything i should be looking out for in partiuclar?
The problems with our SN were that it became lumpy and areas where the missus sits to do her make up etc have pretty much collapsed so i'd want to completely avoid those issueskicking squealing gucci little piggy.0 -
Are the beds from Bensons for beds any good? The wifes friend works there and can get a big discount. I tried this in the showroom http://www.bensonsforbeds.co.uk/ProductDetail.aspx?sID=38494 and it was really comfortable but after reading this I have noticed it is non turn. We are only after a mattress.
To be honest, most of the big chain stores are as bad as each other.0 -
Hope Tim or TiTherev can help me here (or anyone else for that matter), I've read all your comments and it looks as though a pocket spring memory foam mattress is probably out of my price range. I have a budget of £200 max to replace my awful silent night.
I've seen this on ebay, the seller says its made by Breasely in the UK. do you think its worth a punt for that kind of money?
I haven't tried one, but have heard some very mixed reviews. There was someone who used to come on here just to slate me (not meester or hollydays) who said that they had owned one, and it was terrible.
Personally if you can't afford pocket sprung/memory foam, or even pocket sprung only, then I would go for open coil sprung with memory foam.0 -

That's more to do with the poor quality of the SN spring system, I had the same thing with ours and it actually gave both myself and the wife backache! A decent gauge support would help and some do support the edge for the wife to mount herself on to do the make-up
what would be considered a decent guage?kicking squealing gucci little piggy.0 -

Dont know if its any use to anybody but Costco are running their "passport" deal on mattresses for this week only which is 20% off.
I got a double Durham mattress (Silent night i think but cant find it anywhere else!) for £206 (around £55 off) clearly not the best mattress in the world but for my currently meagre budget and a 3 year no quibble guarantuee from Costco then it works for me:D They had lots to choose from for those of you with bigger budgets but the 20% off seems good to me
Not sure if all the Costcos stock mattresses but its worth a look I guess (this was the Haydock one)
I don't own Costco (unfortunately) so no vested interest:rotfl:

what would be considered a decent guage?
13 or 13.5 gauge is medium, 12 or 12.5 gauge is firm (both of these apply to Bonnell open coil springs.
Th SN spring system you had was most likely Miracoil. This is a continuous spring system that was designed to bridge the gap between open coil springs and pocket springs. I know for a fact that Kozeesleep (and probably many other manufacturers) stopped making their version of the Miracoil system because they were too noisey, and too unreliable.0
