Just a word on the Harrison. It may be a one-off but my parents bought a Harrison bed recently, but after only just over a year it was uncomfortable. They got on to Harrison who wanted to charge them £400 for a replacement (a similar sliding scale reimbursment to Silentnight), but after a few phone calls and getting a local 'bed-doctor' out, they got a free replacement due to poor manufacture. Feels good quality to lie on, but not sure about longevity. They did at least get a free replacement, however it's now in the spare room as they bought another while the saga dragged on and dont totally trust the quality!

Thank you. As you say it may have been a one-off but even so... Also, the Harrisons with memory foam topping were non-turn which was also a negative factor. In fact the salesman told me (yes, I know, I know) that memory foam top and bottom of pocket springs was not a good idea as "the springs slide against the bottom layer of foam and the mattress jiggles about and feels unstable" or words to that effect.

Tried out a Kaymed 2000 spring in Dreams which felt very comfy - anything known about Kaymed? The sales lady said it was topped with memory foam, but a quick Google finds Kaymeds topped with "Elastic Polymer Cushioning", perhaps that is memory foam?

Crikey, this thread is getting a bit heated!

Can I please ask a bed related question?

Just curious. I've had two memory foam beds (1 x Kaymed and 1 x Myers) and both have been quite chemically smelly when unwrapped from the packaging. Any recommendations for how long they should be aired for before sleeping on? I did sleep on one the same night while still smelling and had some very psychadelic "Yellow Submarine" type dreams. Would like to avoid this happening again as my family are now buying them (they love mine) and I'm worried in case it affects the kids.

The smel you refer to is the fire retardand chemicals that the memory foam must be treated with in order to comply with British standards. You shouln't normally get much of a smell, but due to the high density of memory foam it is sometimes delivered to the bed manufacturer whilst not being 100% dry. The worst types of mattress for this are the reflex foam/memory foam type when rolled up and vacuum packed. This is because any chemical residue is sealed in, and can't evaporate until the mattress is unpacked.

I've never heard of the chemicals causing psychadelic dreams, but some people do complain of headaches.

If the mattress also contains springs then it should air quicker, but if it is reflex foam/memory foam, then it could take up to a week. If you still get problems after a week, then get the mattress replaced.

Kaymed actually make the memory foam used on many quality British made memory foam mattresses. If it was memory foam, then I would have thought they would call it that.

    Thanks Tim,

In both cases the smell had gone within a week so that's reassuring. Maybe other people don't admit to the psychadelic dreams in case their retailers think they've been cooking with magic mushrooms or something - I'm only telling you because you don't know my real identity ;). If I had just gone into my friendly independent bed shop I'd say it caused me headaches too...

With some people it would boost sales if they thought they were going to have psychadelic dreams. :rotfl:

Something I didn't memtion was that some of the smell is just the smell of a new synthetic product. It's like a brand new carrier bag has a distinctive smell, but try smelling it a week after it has been used, and the smell has gone.

Also went to another bed shop near Dreams and tried out a lovely Harrison Jasper which even online is £900 http://www.yorkshirebedsonline.com/product_info.php?products_id=549.

So I am more confused than ever and feeling quite incapable of making a decision at the moment.

Hi Wistful.......I've been researching beds/ mattresses for a couple of months now. I've followed this forum, read a lot of Tim's helpful advice, and visited several shops to try out various beds, including a couple of Restus pocket sprung ones, called the Buckingham and the Coniston.

I wanted a pocket sprung mattress as I find these a lot more comfortable than the memory foam topped ones.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, for me the Harrison Topaz bed-medium firmness (see link below), was easily the most comfortable that I could find. It was delivered to us a week ago by a local bed retailer, and we are really really pleased with it; it's so comfortable and supportive. We paid £900 For a double divan with 4 draws.

Our bed prior to this one was a Relyon pocket sprung mattress, and this new one is much superior.

I obviously can't comment on its longevity as I've only had it a week........so I hope TiTheRev's parents experience is a one off.

Anyway good luck with your search......

Memory foam does take getting used to if you haven't used it before, but when you do, it is far more comfortable in my opinion.

Let's hope so! I was seriously tempted by Harrison too, until I heard my parents story. My mattress is at home awaiting my return from work, I will update you later on it! :D

Thank you. The Harrisons I tried out felt comfortable and seemed well made - I hope TiTheRev's parents' experience was indeed a one off and that yours lasts a good time.

The Harrisons I saw that were pocket sprung and memory foam were all non-turn. A non-foam one such as the Topaz has the advantage of being turnable. I'll look out for the Topaz on my next field trip.
  • I have just read through this thread.
I am currently looking for a mattress for each of my sons.
I have decided against memory foam, and think I will go for pocket sprung.
Has anyone heard of Sprung Slumber?
Oh, and a big thanks for all the wonderful information you have all posted.
