At the end of the day you will get some people who've had a certain brand/mattress and swear by it, but others who've had nothing but trouble with the same brand/mattress. I think, as a rule, steer clear of Silentnight/Sealy/Rest Assured as they are all part of the same group now and quality has made way for mass-production and profits. The smaller company, that can only really make sales from word or mouth and customer service are better guides as they will not be reliant on huge advertising budgets to create turnover but more the quality of their product selling itself.

Healthbeds, IMHO, are trying to seperate themselves from 'normal' mattresses by being specifically hypoallergenic/lumbar supportive etc, and thus a bit more specialist and specialists tend to charge more ;) whether the quality is actually any better or not only a bed specialist would know, but Which? are very impartial.

You take an element of risk with any purchase, but if the customer service and guarantee is there to support the sale then you will have a better chance if there is complications further down the road. From personal experience Silentnight have shocking customer service, and all they cared about was sales and once it's yours it's your problem...

Essentially, even the highest quality bed can be made by someone on an 'off-day' but it's how its sorted after that that's the issue. You just know to steer clear of certain brands due to quality of manufacture from the start.

Anyone ever considered making this a sticky?! It's used enough and plenty of 'similar' threads are started by others not seeing this one?!

    Just a thought

    Hello Tim

In a previous post you mention people being victim of the non turn mattress gimmick, but like you said this particular one is specifically a non turn. I understand these mattresses are very heavy and so only having to turn it lengthways surely can only be seen as a bonus especially for older people.

Yes non turn mattresses are a gimmick. They put memory foam on one side only to save money, and not for the convenience of pensioners who find them heavy. But they aren't going to tell customers that are they?

It would only be a bonus to pensioners if they had actually done something to the components of the mattress to make it last as long as a two sided mattress........but they haven't.

Have you had any bad experiences with these mattresses yourself.

No I haven't because I don't sell them yet, although I may do soon. But being in the trade you do hear things.

I know you have said these are well made and much better than the Tempur brand.

The Which magazine report said they were much better than Tempur.

When threads are made into a sticky, it makes them invisible to most forum users!

Almost all memory foam mattresses are hypoallergenic, and if made to a high standard should all give good lumbar support. It's just that Healthbeds concentrate on these subjects in their advertising (probably to justify their name).

    Cheers TiTheRev.

Sorry, the Healthbeds brand. I have been turned off a bit after another poster had a major problem with theirs. The 10 year test Which? did seem to do very well though.

The 10 year test is carried out by machines (mainly a roller I think). Although this could give a rough idea, it is no substitute for a real person sleeping on the bed for 10 years.

  • Been trawling through this thread, but still a bit confused about what's best for us.

I've spotted this kingsize bed (it's £214 at my local Homebase) which has a slatted base. Would you be able to recommend a mattress for the bed frame? We currently have an orthopaedic mattress, it's firm on a divan. We hate soft beds. I'm looking to pay around £200-£250 for a mattress.

Or if you have any recommendations for a better bed/mattress deal that will be great. Need a kingsize, firm mattress, low or no footend. £500 is the very max of our budget, less is better ;)

You do know that this bed doesn't have sprung slats don't you?

You should be able to get one with sprung slats for the same or less money on line.

The best type of mattress for a slatted base would be open coil sprung. You should be able to get a top of the range, 10" deep, firm open coil sprung mattress on line for £200 no problem at all.

LostSocks (and two smoking barrels?! - sorry, couldn't help myself :D), you'd probably get a better deal buying them seperately. Check out some sprung slats like Tim suggests and then you can find a suitable mattress elsewhere without being tied into buying a mattress that suits the bed more than you!
