Which mattress? (merged threads)

Hi Tim
I need a new bed and mattress. Am I right in thinking that the mattress matters more than the bed? What I was currently thinking of doing was going super cheap on the bed - e.g. the 160cm Ikea Heimdal at £55 (plus 2x £12.50 birch slats). I'd then spend the money I saved on a really nice £300-£450 pocket sprung mattress with double sided foam.
Can I get away with this or should I spend more on the bed?
Cheers

Hi Ben, I had exactly that thought and I think Tim's reply was that you will get more of a luxury feel by having a sprung base. I would be interested to know which mattress you go for as I am also looking at a pocket sprung plus memory foam - see the post above yours.0

Hi Ben
There could be two problems with the Ikea bed you have chosen:- The bed you mentioned is continental size, so you could end up having to pay extra for the mattrress to be specially made in a continental size rather than UK size.
http://reviews.ebay.co.uk/Mattress-Sizes-UK-amp-Continental-Ikea_W0QQugidZ10000000008370115 - There have been a number of threds on here where many people have complained about Ikea beds collapsing.

A sprung base can be quite expensive in comparison to a metal bedstead. The birch slats that Ben mentioned are actually sprung slats. These will give a more luxurious feel than ordinary rigid slats.0 -

Having said that, 160cm sounds like a good size - slightly bigger than a UK King, but not stupidly large like a Super King.Tim_Deegan wrote: »Sprung slats are usually quite close together, so as long as they aren't any more than 3" apart then they would be fine with a two sided pocket sprung/memory foam mattress.Tim_Deegan wrote: »A sprung base can be quite expensive in comparison to a metal bedstead.

Yes, this is annoying. I don't plan to keep buying beds from Ikea so having a UK sized mattress would be better. Would it be a bad idea to put a UK King (150cm) on the 160cm base?
Yes it could cause serious damage to the springs where they overhang the base.
Someone mentioned that Ikea have started selling UK sizes also, is this true?0 -

Yes it should be fine.

Tim_Deegan wrote: »It is possible, but not very likely with reflex foam. It is more common to get a rouge product with springs as there could be a weak spring. But with foam even if there is a defect in the mixing of the raw ingredients, then the foam surrounding it should help support the defect.
This type of mattress is non turn. It is made up from a layer of reflex foam with a layer of memory foam on top. So it can't be turned over, but must be rotated lengthways.
So in the case of Healthbeds you now agree its not a gimmick.0
