Which mattress? (merged threads)

I spent 2 full weekends trying to find a mattress for my 75 yr old mum. She suffers from Scoliosis and arthritis and just could not get comfortable in her bed. (Since death of dad she's been sleeping in another bedroom) moved from double to 3/4 bed with firmer mattress).
I did actually reference lots of sites on the net and I found that they were very useful and helped a lot in determining our choice.
She's now sleeping better than she has in 3 years!
We opted for spring coil with upper level of ventilated memory foam.
Do you mean open coil sprung?
And what do you mean by ventilated memory foam? Not an expert but sites advised
Higher number of coils increases firmness of mattress.
That's untrue, and is actually sometimes the opposite to the truth. It all depends on the type of springs, the spring manufacturer, and the gauge of the steel used.Old wife's tale that back pain sufferers need a firm mattress.
Actually it is true if you are talking about pocket sprung mattress. They provide excellent support, so you should go for what firmness you prefer.
As far as open coil sprung mattresses go medium to firm is now recognised as the best for back support. This was the result of a report last year in the Lancet.Mattress needs to provide support to keep spine, shoulders, calfs in correct position. Too firm won't do that. Medium better?
As I said above, go for the firmness you like best with pocket sprung mattresses, but with open coil sprung go for medium to firm.Look for minimum guarantee of 5 yrs ... Bedshed only gives 1yr so whilst cheap may not be best?
The guarantee is 12 months for most manufacturers.
When you see a longer warranty, it is usually on a sliding scale. All products must have a design life. So for example if something has a design life of 5 years, and develops a fault due to materials or workmanship after 4 years, then the manufacturer must pay towards the cost of replacement or repair. But you would have to pay 80% plus delivery. So when manufacturers give a 5 year warranty, then they are only doing what they are obliged to do by law, but they are using it as a sales gimmick.
If there was a fault in the manufacturing process then it should appear within 12 months anyway.Silk covering - no benefit though will cost you more.
Yes silk coverings are just a gimmick.
With your mothers condition it is most likely the memory foam that she is benefiting from most. Memory foam is designed to give even support without causing pressure points.0 -

I have been readin your advice and was hoping you could help me out.
I have decided on this bed
Lenora King Size from Homebase
but unsure with the minefield of mattresses but have come up with these two:
Joseph Freestyle from mattress world £161
King Size Saturn from sleeping solutions (highgate beds) £279
We want a firm mattress and as you can see from the price were looking to spend between £150 - £260.
What you think as I have now spent the past day trying to work out the best and just cant.
sorry for the links as im new on here im not allowed to post any links.
The Joseph mattress is a middle to low end medium open coil sprung mattress.
The Saturn is a high end firm open coil sprung mattress, but at £279 is way over priced. How did you find out it was made by Highgate?0 -

Currently have a John Lewis ViSpring Heritage mattress which is 7-8 years old and sits on a 2" sprung slatted base. This seems to have lasted well (no signs of springs poking through) although having read this forum we might not have had the right bed for it and I would not have the slightest idea if it is knackered or not?
The good lady has twisted my arm and we have just bought a new sprung slatted bed 2" gap again which we need a new mattress for (old ones going in the spare rooom).
Having read the thread(s) it seems a Pocket Sprung 1000-1600 springs would be ideal. We were thinking memory foam topper so we can turn the mattress and take off in the summer months (if required).
What we need advice on is how to tell what would be OK for a slatted base and what would not? Would we be better off going for a Open Coil with / without memory foam?
Have thought about John Lewis, Hypnos and ViSprung, although budget is a limiting factor..
Your thoughts and guidance would be most appreciated..
Many thanks
If you are used to a pocket sprung mattress then changing to open coil sprung wouldn't be a good move.
Mattresses with memory foam built in work far better than toppers. You can get two sided pocket sprung and memory foam (2" gaps would be fine with these as the memory foam on the bottom will spread the weight out over the slats), so that you can turn it. If you are worried about being too hot in summer then there are climate control fabrics available like Climasmart and Outlast (not coolmax, as all that does is take the moisture away from your body).0 -

They are both made by the Silentnight group :eek::eek:
Also they are both medium to firm.
The first one contains the Miracoil spring system
The first one is non turn
You can get far better for less money if you shop around on line.0 -

I can't recommend anything through MSE I'm afraid....sorry.
Yes the big bed chain stores do charge silly prices. Also many of their models are made specially for them to a lower spec.0 -
Do the Climasmart and Outlast mattress coverings still make a difference when you've got a mattress protector and
sheet on top of them ? I know they don't add a great deal to the cost of a mattress, but every little helps !0 -

Yes they do as long as you only use a thin mattress protector. Climasmart under the name of Thermocool (as it is called in Europe) is actually widely used by Formula 1 teams in the drivers and mechanics clothing. Pringle use it in some of their top of the range golf clothing. And it is also widely used in top of the range ski clothing. You can find more details here0
