Hi, I am hoping one of you helpful people can give me some advice. To cut a long story short:rolleyes:, I bought a bed from Sleepmasters in January for £350 (meant to have been half price plus a further £100 off), the first one delivered was faulty (quilting had gone flat and the springs could be felt). After about 6weeks I received a replacement but have been unable to sleep in it, as it gives me very bad back ache and joint pain, I assume because its too firm. It appears firmer than the original. Sleepmasters will not give a refund but I can pay extra towards another bed plus 10% of the original bed plus another £35 delivery fee.
Basically I'll need to pay another £220 to get something more comfortable, which is obviously more than I had originally budgeted for. I don't really want to have another bed from Sleepmasters, due to all of the above, plus their inefficient customer services.
I just don't know whether to give Sleepmasters another £220 or just start again and buy a different bed some where else, but either way its obviously going to be a costly mistake. All the bed models which are of a higher specification that the one I purchased are all non turn, pocket sprung with memory foam on top.
Any advice greatly received, thank you.0 -

If the first mattress was faulty, and the second wasn't like the one you tried in the shop, then it might be worth contacting trading standards.0 -

Agreed and perhaps first a letter to the MD/CEO of the company suggesting you want this matter sorted or you will go to Trading Standards and the press...0 -
Thank you both for your replies. Customer services actually told me that I could not compare mine to the one in the show room, as obviously it had been laid on many more times! I'm not entirely sure if this is the case how you can make an informed purchase

They are talking complete rubbish, and you are completely right.
There would be no point in them having a showroom otherwise. It sounds like they are either saying that the mattresses in their showroom are worn out, or there is no consistencey.0 -
Thanks Tim, that's what I thought, I guess I now need to be a bit more assertive.0

Ok Tim,
I have been readin your advice and was hoping you could help me out.
I have decided on this bed
Lenora King Size from Homebase
but unsure with the minefield of mattresses but have come up with these two:
Joseph Freestyle from mattress world £161
King Size Saturn from sleeping solutions (highgate beds) £279
We want a firm mattress and as you can see from the price were looking to spend between £150 - £260.
What you think as I have now spent the past day trying to work out the best and just cant.
sorry for the links as im new on here im not allowed to post any links.0 -
Tim, we too have been following the thread and after 40 pages decided to jump to the end and ask a few questions, apologies if you have already answered these elsewhere.
Currently have a John Lewis ViSpring Heritage mattress which is 7-8 years old and sits on a 2" sprung slatted base. This seems to have lasted well (no signs of springs poking through) although having read this forum we might not have had the right bed for it and I would not have the slightest idea if it is knackered or not?
The good lady has twisted my arm and we have just bought a new sprung slatted bed 2" gap again which we need a new mattress for (old ones going in the spare rooom).
Having read the thread(s) it seems a Pocket Sprung 1000-1600 springs would be ideal. We were thinking memory foam topper so we can turn the mattress and take off in the summer months (if required).
What we need advice on is how to tell what would be OK for a slatted base and what would not? Would we be better off going for a Open Coil with / without memory foam?
Have thought about John Lewis, Hypnos and ViSprung, although budget is a limiting factor..
Your thoughts and guidance would be most appreciated..
Many thanks0 -
After researching this forum and visiting quite a few shops I have now bought a Millbrook 1700 pocket sprung bed and it is absolutely wonderful how I managed with the bed before I do not know.
I did try beds with memory foam on top but according to most of the shops I visited, and I visited quite a few, they did say in there opinion pocket sprung is the best.
I think I got the bed for a really good price, sprung base, 1700 pocket springs 2 drawers £700 thats with my quidco discount. Great0 -
I spent 2 full weekends trying to find a mattress for my 75 yr old mum. She suffers from Scoliosis and arthritis and just could not get comfortable in her bed. (Since death of dad she's been sleeping in another bedroom) moved from double to 3/4 bed with firmer mattress).
I did actually reference lots of sites on the net and I found that they were very useful and helped a lot in determining our choice.
She's now sleeping better than she has in 3 years!
We opted for spring coil with upper level of ventilated memory foam.
Not an expert but sites advised
Higher number of coils increases firmness of mattress.
Old wife's tale that back pain sufferers need a firm mattress.
Mattress needs to provide support to keep spine, shoulders, calfs in correct position. Too firm won't do that. Medium better?
Look for minimum guarantee of 5 yrs ... Bedshed only gives 1yr so whilst cheap may not be best?
Silk covering - no benefit though will cost you more.
Now that said we have two Ikea beds in our house for our kids (19/21) ...you may mock that they still live at home but it works). They love them!0
