Thanks once again. La Romantica will make me an all latex mattress? That's not memory foam or any other foam but latex? Because partner is a sweaty bod been told latex is needed. If it's definitely latex then will make the journey although the M62 is a pain in the neck.0

Yes it is latex. I'd call them first though because they are only just starting to make them.
They also do 2 sided pocket sprung with latex foam, and a Climasmart (climate control) fabric.0 -
Thanks for all your help. Guy this morning told me to ring ahead of visit to ensure they had a Madrid on hand to try. So will dust the passports off and venture over the pennines. Only joking, have rellies in Yorkshire so know yorkies are really ok, just speak a little strangely. May be next week now but will post on how we get on.0

Hi - thanks for getting back to me.
OH varied the slats on our two halves of the bedframe with the logic that I could get away with less at the bottom end where I don't really reach and he'd need more in the middle where most of his weight is! Might be up to 2 or 3 inches separation, each wooden slat is around 2 inches wide and curves upwards.
Probably not the best base for a new mattress, which we're expecting to pay up to £400 for! I'm guessing you'll recommend using the hardboard sheet to cover? I think we'd have to get that cut to size in two halves too in order to get up final stairs into our loft room.
Again, thanks in advance for any advice. From Money Spending Expert  to Money Saving Expert0 -
well I had DS (4) help me take mattress of and cover slats with 2 layers of 'thick' carboard (packing cases). Mattress back on top then foam campbed mattress on top of crappy mattress. Feels better when I sit on it so will roadtest tonight. (getting hardboard at weekend)DEBT: £500 credit card £800 Bank overdraft

It all depends on why type of mattress you are after:- Open coil sprung would be fine with your slats.
- With pocket sprung only you would need to use hardboard. Some retailers sell it in 2' widths.
- If it is 2 sided pocket sprung with memory foam, then it would be ok as long as the gaps are no more than 3" apart.

Hi, a couple of months ago, we purchased a new Komfi fusion mattress from a local supplier at a very good price. Before the purchase, we did a lot of research and spent ages in bed shops actually trying out mattresses and this was the one we chose based on comfort and quality. We also reviewed this thread for tips on buying mattresses. To my horror, I have discovered that I have a big problem with this mattress. I am finding that I am regularly hot underneath even with all the bedclothes removed. Often I am cold on top and hot on the bottom. Our bedroom is always the coolest room in the house.
It has got to the point where we need to replace the mattress as I am losing a lot of sleep. However, I am not sure what to get but we actually like the memory foam and the support it provides. Clearly I need to look at pocket springs for air circulation but I am wondering if we purchased a sprung mattress with memory foam on top, would I have a similar experience or should I consider mattresses without memory foam.0 -

There is a huge difference in cooling between a reflex foam/memory foam and pocket spring (full size steel)/memory foam. This is because the spring layer allows the air to circulate around the mattress and dissipate the heat from the memory foam. In fact each time you move the mattress acts like bellows.
Another option (although more expensive) is pocket sprung with full Talalay Latex, which is supposed to be slightly cooler than memory foam.
Another option is either of the above with a climate control fabric like Climasmart or Outlast.0 -
In a double sized pocket sprung mattress, what's the optimum number of springs?
Most places seem to quote the springs they have in a king sized mattress, so I'm not really sure how many I should be looking for in a double.Sigless0 -

You shouldn't be looking for the number in a double as the industry standard is to quote the number in a king size. So for example a 1000 pocket sprung king size mattress would have 1200 springs in a super king size, but would still be called 1000 pocket sprung. The same works the other way for smaller mattresses. A single 1000 pocket sprung mattress won't contain 1000 springs, but it will have the same number of springs per square foot as the king size version.
So you need to be looking at models that are between 1000 and 1800 pocket sprung in a king size, and then order the double size.0
