  • Hi there.

I'm looking to replace a 7 year old kingsize Silentnight Miracoil mattress (completely on its last legs!) - although waiting for arrival of new baby, due 11th June - just in case!

I'd also appreciate any advice on do's & dont's of suitable mattress type for a slatted wood base. I recall a couple of slats were broken in our house move and the OH re-assembled at different separations on our respective halves of the bedframe - to even out the loss of the broken ones.

Might this slats separation cause problems with wear and tear on our new mattress - and which type suits this base best?

Many thanks in advance for any advice!

can someone help me here; I needed a bed as a 12-18 mnth short term thing. I bought a kingsize metal bed with mattress from argos; now there's two problems with it - the bed has ROUND metal slats? which is very weird and you can feel the roundess so they dig into the mattress, also the mattress is sheer crap.

    now because this was for a p/t house (complicated) I am past my 30 day refund thingie so my problem is sorting out a more comfortable nights sleep for least cost possible;

option one - live with exisitng - but the only way I can sleep on it at present is by having two campbed mattresses UNDER the mattress to soften the rounded slats and a quilt ON TOP of the mattress to soften the mattress bumps!

option 2 - replace slats with Ikea wooden slats - but these require a midbeam and this bed doesn't have one + new mattress

option 3 -Lie sheet(s) of plywood over slats + new mattress

option 4 - new bed and swallow the cost

option 5 - ring argos and complain

what would you do? I have back problems already but I'm on a very tight budget so please don't go suggesting anything expensive.

DH will slaughter me anyway for 'wasting' money

Well then definately call Argos. I am sure it came with a manufacturers guarantee too plus you have some staturory rights.. It is meant to last more than 5 weeks! Argos are usually pretty good...

Hi, having gone through this thread, I would still appreciate some advice please.

In the past 2 years both my OH and I are finding we are waking up with bad backs,
I can no longer sleep for more than 5 hours now.

Our bed base is a double size with 2 side by side individual slat supports.

I don't know what kind of matress we have at the moment, we have had it for about
5 years and for the past 12 months we have been using a memory foam matress topper,
which was helpful at first (I do like the memory foam.)...
My OH is a big guy and i'm about half his weight .

My question is, what type of matress would you recommend for us,
given the info above & that we do like the memory foam.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated

    Cheers

Lay a sheet of hardboard (cheaper than ply) over the slats. This should hopefully make the existing mattress more comfortable. If not then buy a middle of the range open coil sprung mattress. Don't go for budget as you will be able to feel the springs.

I think the OP's point was that the bed isn't faulty, but it is just a poor design. So I doubt they would take it back if there isn't anything wrong with it.

This could depend on a few factors.
    • First of all have a look at the label on the mattress to see what make and model it is.
    • I presume that you both found the mattress comfortable when you bought it?
    • How far apart are the slats?
    • How firm do you like you mattress?
    • What is your budget?
As you have found out, a topper is no good for reviving a worn out mattress.
