A good quality memory foam mattress will usually come with a 20+ year warranty (split 10 yr full warranty, then 10 yr depreciating). Most (but not all) spring mattresses I've seen come with around a 10-15 year warranty.

I think the warranty tends to speak for itself - but then again, it's worthless if you can't get a good night's rest on the mattress.

Actually most of them that do have long warranties are just that....warranties, and not guarantees. With most manufacturers the guarantee is only for 12 months (sometimes it is longer), but the warranties are usually on a very missleading sliding scale.

The ones that do give long guarantees usually have so many terms and conditions attached that you would be very lucky to get an exchange.

Someone on here actually said that they reported a fault with a mattress from a very well known memory foam mattress manufacturer, but they said that there was nothing wrong with it because a depression of up to 1.5" was normal.........which is complete rubbish, and is a sign that the reflex foam is deteriorating.

Personally, I'd look for a mattress store that has a "comfort guarantee" - meaning that if you can't sleep well on the mattress you can return it or at least exchange it for store credit to be used toward a different one.

I agree 100% on that one, as you can only get a very rough idea by laying on a mattress for 10 mins in a shop.

    Hi all -

Thought I'd offer up a second "expert" opinion on mattresses. I used to work for an ergonomic products store, and one of our product lines was mattresses. I no longer work there (because I wanted to focus on office B2B sales and the company had little interest in supporting that endeavor) - but still have a great deal of knowledge regarding ergonomics and mattresses.

I personally sleep on a 'generic' memory foam mattress that I bought on eBay (from a manufacturer). I have slept on it for the past 4.5 years very soundly, and the one drawback is that most other mattresses don't sleep well for me anymore because I've become spoiled. The mattress came with a 20 year warranty (10 year full warranty, 10 year depreciated value) - which is roughly industry standard for memory foam.

In almost all cases, I would recommend AGAINST spring mattresses (and air mattresses). They tend to have a shorter warranty (for a reason) and usually don't sleep as well as memory foam.

That being said, if a mattress is comfortable - it's comfortable. A good mattress store should have some sort of guarantee or trial period - where you can take the bed home and try it for 30-90 days. There might be some attached costs (like delivery/handling) that are unavoidable, but it'd be worth it if you're going to spend the next 10-20 years on the mattress.

Put bluntly: you don't buy an auto without taking it for a test drive, why on Earth would you buy a mattress without doing the same?

I'd be happy to field questions about mattresses in general, but don't have the time to analyze mattresses on an individual basis (and ultimately, I can't determine what's the right fit for you).

    Cheers!

This is true - my own memory foam mattress now has a stain (my dog wanted to let me know that she needed some attention) so my warranty is no longer any good.

The warranty *should* specify how much of a depression is normal, and that varies from mattress to mattress. 1.5" is rather noticeable, but not unheard of. If that had happened in our store, we honoured the manufacturer warranty ourselves and dealt with them - leaving the customer happy and with a new bed.

A turnable mattress will last far longer than a non turn one.

Not sure I understand the rationale behind this statement - unless you're suggesting that a mattress designed to be flipped (with a reflex core and TWO comfort layers, one on each side) is more durable than a reflex core and one comfort layer on top.

Tempur-Pedic, probably the leading brand, doesn't have a single mattress that I know of designed to be flipped.
  • Anyone heard of Profile mattresses? Tried one in a store today was very comfortable, think it was called a Memory Pocket 1000.

It's quite simple, any mattress will wear more evenly if it can be turned over and rotated.

As you have been in the trade you should know that the whole bed industry is full of hype and gimmicks, and that the whole non turn mattress thing isn't for convenience, but is because the most expensive part of the mattress is the memory foam, so it is far cheaper to only put it on one side.

It also sounds like sales hype when you call the memory foam layer the comfort layer. As I said in a previous post, the memory foam is only there to mould to your body so that it gives even support without causing pressure points.

You should also know that the reason Tempur were the market leader was because they used to manufacture memory foam for NASA when they held the patent. And that now there are many other manufacturers who make it just as good (if not better). You should also know that Tempur came out bottom in the Which magazine report.

Another thing that you should know is how reflex foam is constructed, and how it differs from memory foam. And how reflex foam degrades (causing the depressions that some manufacturers deem acceptable).

You don't mean the Silentnight one do you?
  • Please could anyone let me know whether this is a good mattress?
    (Sleep assured mattress)

As a new user I cannot post links but this can be found on Ebay
    when searched for "King-Size-10-Memory-Foam-Mattress-with-Free-Pillows"

65kg/m3 density and all the other specifications that I do not understand very well.

    Thanks in advance,

It didn't have Silentnight written on it anywhere! Have seen your previous posts on them so will stay clear.

What about Millbrook, are they a decent quality? Tried a Raphael 1700 pocket sprung at lunchtime and really liked it. Anyone got any opinions?

    Thanks!

Ok, it's just that Silentnight make a Profile.

You will find that you get better quality for less money with smaller independent manufacturers.
