Which mattress? (merged threads)

I saw some extra deep bedding in Dunhill at the weekend. Couldn't tell you the actual depth though.
I have found through experience that unless fitted sheets actually state the depth of mattress that they are suitable for, then they are usually designed for mattresses up to 8" deep.0 -
Advice sought please on the following
Q. How long should the chemical smell from a memory foam mattress and pillows , take to dissipate ? I have had the mattress a week now and also the pillows and even hung them ( the pillows ) out on the line in the fresh air for hours to aerate. But still a foisty smell lingers. It is not overwhemingly bad - but enough to spoil the otherwise freshly laundered cotton fresh linen smell that is usually in our bed room. What can I do to help the odour evaporate more readily ? How long should I be expected to put up with it ?
Q. I have a new bed frame. The spine for the curved slats is pine. The wooden slats came joined together in ladder formation with some sort of plastic tape stapled to each of them . Should this tape be removed before sliding the slats into the holding collars and gluing the plastic dowels into the frame ?
Many thanks in anticipation0 -

If the smell is still quite strong after a week, then send them back. Due to the very high density of memory foam it can take a while for the fire retardent chemicals to dry fully. If the mattress comes rolled up and vacuum packed, then it will have no chance of drying whilst it is in storage, but a week after opening most of the smell should have gone.
The tape is usually to space the slats out correctly, and would normally be left in place. Is the tape stapled to the slats?0 -
Hi
Question for Tim!
Are the two mattresses below ok for the price? I change my mattress every 3 years so I'm not looking for one to last a lifetime. Just a comfortable mattress for 2 adults weighing approx 11/13 stone.
Taken from Tesco Direct:
Silentnight Superior Tufted Condor Mattress-King £293
Sealy Posturepedic Silver Dream Deluxe Mattress £339.50
Thanks

Hi Nicky.
They are both actually made by the same company, and to be honest I would only take them if they were free, as you might have to start changing them twice (or even three times) as often.
A good quality mattress that is looked after should give at least a good 10 years of service.0 -

The photo on the first one appears to be a photo of the Airsprung Enigma, but that one doesn't contain any memory foam. It doesn't say the depth or the density of the memory foam (which are both very important). Also it doesn't say the gauge of the springs, but at a rating of medium to firm I would suspect the are 12.5 gauge bonnell open coil sprung. It doesn't say non turn, but I suspect it probably is. It appears that this model may be made for Argos.
The second one is very similar to the first except that it has the trizone spring system. This is a bit of a gimmick, and just meand that it has different spring tensions across the mattress.
The so called reduced prices aren't what I would call low. In fact I would say they are about right from what you can tell from the spec.
If I were you I would give Airsprung a call:

Hello Omair
The Ortho Memory has 20mm of support foam and 20mm visco elastic memory foam with a 12.5G framed spring unit.
The Ferndown Memory also has 20mm of support foam and 20mm visco elastic memory foam- but with a Trizone framed spring unit, this has medium springs at the head and foot end of the mattress with 12.5G firmer springs in the central section of the mattress to support the heaviest part of the body which is the lumber section.
There are more fillings in the Ferndown than the Ortho, which gives a softer feel than the firm feel of the Ortho.
I hope this is of help to you.
Regards
June

Hmm, that's less than 1" of memory foam. They might as well not have any.0 -
Fat_Debtor wrote: »Oh, and I'd never heard of La Romantica beds before I read this thread, well some of it at any rate. Despite no reviews and very little feedback, they now appear to the bed of choice on MSE. Bravo. All I can say is they'd better be more comfortable and long lasting than they look, cos they look rubbish!
They look rubbish?...What's that opinion based on then? A webpage image or close inspection and first hand experience of the product? Does it matter what they look like? Having slept on one for some months now, I'm more interested in how my mattress feels... So far it's been excellent but if any issues arise in time I'll be posting the details here...

Really 30mm of memory foam with a density of just 48kg isn't worth having. You may as well just buy a cheap reflex foam only mattress.0
