Hi Tim,
I have been reading through your advice on these forums and was wondering if you could help me summarise!
I am looking for a new King Size mattress, and I am about 6' 5" weighing in around 20 stone! I am sick of waking up in the morning with lower back pain so need some support.
Would I be right in thinking from all the advice I have read from you on here to others, that I would be best with a pocket sprung mattress with as many springs as possible, with a 2.5" layer of memory foam on top with a density of around 60? Or should I go for a sprung mattress with a topper!? I've also noted you recommend a turnable mattress for longevity, and was looking at this one on ebay if you could let me know what you think?

Some advise please from Tim / other MSE'rs
I currently have a Slumberland Divan, about 6 years old. The GF complains that she keeps rolling into the centre and is thrown into the air when I turn over. I've also been waking with bad back / aching neck recently. In light of this, I reckon a new mattress/bed is in order.
Will it be OK to keep the divan base and order mattress on it's own or is best practice to get new base as well?
Looking at advice on here, Pocket Sprung seems to be the best and medium firm seems to be about the right support. . 'Airsprung' and 'Kozee' seem to be relatively competitively priced but are these any good?
Any advise much appreciated.
Edit: Been looking at these which all come in under £500:

As far as the base goes, it depends on the condition of the old one.
Ok, I see you have now deleted the Rest Assured one. So here goes for the others:
The site doesn't give a firmness rating for any of them. However the second one is a medium to firm, and the Caversham is medium. The Pocketmaster is entry level for pocket sprung, but the Caversham if much more middle to high end of the pocket sprung range.
I'd look for a company who would let you return it if you don't like it though.0 -
Hi I can definitely recommend Hypnos mattresses, they are very luxurious and a little more expensive but well worth the extra money. I have bought silentnight, sealy, rest assured and myers in the past but they don't come anywhere near as good as Hypnos.0

No, deffinately not as many springs as possible. If a mattress has too many pocket springs then each individual spring has to be so small and weal that they get damaged easily. Personally I recommend between 1000 and 1800 for a king size mattress.bigscousekev wrote: »with a 2.5" layer of memory foam on top with a density of around 60?
The memory foam should be between 2" and 2.5" (2" is better if you want to stay cooler.bigscousekev wrote: »Or should I go for a sprung mattress with a topper!?
No. Toppers are ok if you already have a decent mattress, but it is far better to buy the mattress with the memory foam built in, as all the components are designed to compliment each otherbigscousekev wrote: »I've also noted you recommend a turnable mattress for longevity, and was looking at this one on ebay if you could let me know what you think?

That mattress is open coil sprung, not pocket sprung. It doesn't have memory foam on both sides either. It has memory foam on one side, but traditional quilting on the other.0 -

I agree that Hypnos are good mattresses, but they are very very overpriced for what you actually get.
You can't really compare a Silentnight or Rest Assured to a Hypnos as they are at opposite ends of the quality scale.0 -
Hi Tim, stumbled upon the thread by accident and although I really ought to be in bed just had to read it all, and really great advice too!
I bought my 7yr 2 mattresses off ebay for her cabin bed. Quite cheap admittedly and tbh I felt quite guilty especially knowing how much I spent on my own mattress from Marks & Sparks.
Could you recommend a topper or mattress pad for one of the mattress so that she can get a truly lush night sleep. The guest bed is not really that important as it will not be regulalry used. This is the link to the mattress bought -

After reading the description for the mattresses that you bought, I can see that the picture didn't match the description. The picture showed a deep quilted mattress, but the description says 'flat top', which basically means very little quilting (budget).
You actually paid too much for budget mattresses. You can get deep quilted mattresses for that price.
To be honest you might be better off just replacing the mattresses, as it could cost nearly as much again to buy a decent topper, and as i allways say, you shouldn't use a topper to revive a rubbish mattress.0 -

I believe that this is one of Dreams own models, which would ring alarm bells right from the start. But apart from that:- It has 2000 pocket springs in a king size. This is actually too much for a 2 sided mattress, as each spring has to be so small to fit them in, that they tend to be weak and get damaged easily. However this is a non turn mattress, so the springs won't last as long anyway, so 2000 really is too many.
- As I mentioned above, it is a none turn mattress.
- It doesn't actually say how deep the memory foam is, but it looks too deep.
- They don't mention the density of the memory foam.

Unfortunately I dont have any more info.....but the depth of the memory foam is big.....
I guess it is time for a new search....thanks.....0
