I'm 6ft, 13 stone 2
Wife is 5'9 and about 9.5 stone
Different people suit different beds, so just wanted to gauge this
Feel free to ignore this if you dont feel comfortable sharing this info.
No problems - Im not that shy. Anyway I'm 5ft 8ins and c. 16 stone and the wife is 5ft 10ins and c. 10 stone.
IIRC initially after filling him on our personal details, preferences and the type of mattress we'd had previously, Tim Deegan recommended the La Romantica Venice, advising that it would be a tad softer than the Madrid. Given that we were buying 'blind', however, I didn't want to take a chance on anything which was too soft so opted for the Madrid. I can't say whether the Venice would have been better but we're delighted with the Madrid because, after the initial 'getting used to it' period, it's proved wonderfully comfortable. I tend to sleep right on the edge of the bed a lot and it supports my bulk wonderfully! No chance of me rolling off and down the stairs in the middle of the night.....
Of course this is a very subjective matter but Tim's very helpful so you could always seek his advice and see what he says.
Hope this helps!0 -
I've been following this thread and I'm a bit stumped for what to get!
I need to replace my Staples Sandringham king size pocket sprung bed (kind of soft and supportive), I've had it over 10 years and it's been brilliant, but now it's getting a bit uncomfortable.
My bedstead has a slatted base, slats are 2" apart and they are in excellent condition so won't be changing it.
I'm quite interested in memory foam, but I do like to sleep on my side and my tummy so I'd like a fairly soft mattress as I can get sore neck and shoulder if I sleep on a too firm mattress. Anyone has any suggestions? I suppose my budget would be around £600 for a king size.
My friend spent £2k on a Dunlopillo latex bed and five years later it's gone all funny, so want something of a good quality that won't fall apart quickly!

It is open coil sprung.0 -

It actually means that it is good for back support, but in the bed industry it is more often than not used for firm mattresses. This is often misleading because it makes it sound like a firm open coil sprung mattress is better for back support than pocket springs, but this is far from the truth.0 -
Hello! We're looking to buy a pocket sprung double mattress and have up to £500 to spend although we'd rather only spend about £300 if we can get a good one for that price.
We tried some out today and I was wondering if anyone could advise whether or not these ones are any good:
Pure Silk 1000 Healthopaedic (I think it's made by Highgate beds)
Moonflower Mozart 1500 cashmere
Highgate Rosedale
Sleep to Live series 700 and 300 (this was recommended in Bensons beds it had a firmer side for my boyfriend and a softer side for me) it was pretty expensive and I can't find any info about these mattresses online. It does come with a 10 year warranty though which seems good.
Nearly all the mattresses we looked at were non turn but I see that these sort have been criticised on this forum so am not sure whether to completely rule them out or not.
My boyfriend likes quite a firm bed and he suffers from lower back pain sometimes (he also gets very hot so I guess we should avoid memory foam). I can pretty much sleep on anything but tend to prefer a slightly softer mattress than him, I expect a medium would be ok for both of us.
I've seen the La Romatica mattresses very highly recommended on here but as we live in Cornwall I doubt we'd be able to try one out and I feel uneasy about buying without trying.
Our bed has a slatted base so I know we need to put some board over it or add more slats for a pocket sprung mattress.
I'm happy to buy online but would prefer to see and lie on the mattress in a shop first.
Our current mattress was super cheap from Argos and is the most uncomfortable thing I've ever slept on, some of the springs have actually poked through one side so all the mattresses we tried today seemed amazing compared to this!
If anyone can give us any advice I'd be very grateful as at the moment I just don't know which one we should get.
Thanks!0 -

You need to start looking again, and completely rule out any non turn pocket sprung mattress, as they won't last as long.
As for the mattresses that are firmer one side than the other, you can't even rotate these lengthways unless you keep swapping which side of the bed you sleep on.
Avoid listening to most of the advice you are given in the large chain stores, as they will almost allways just try and push you towards a mattress that gives them more commision.
With pocket springs you don't have to go for a firm mattress for back support (this only applies to open coil springs). So you can find a mattress that you both like rather than going for a firm one because your boyfriend thinks he needs one.0 -

All I am allowed to say on MSE in answer to your question is: A sprung divan base is just a matter of preference. A platform top base will give a firmer feel, and a sprung base will give a softer and more luxurious feel.0
