    Hi Tim,

Would you be kind enough to advise on this Habitat mattress?
    www. habitat.co.uk/fcp/product/browse/Double-7-zoned-bonnell-mattress/989410
(sorry, forum isn't letting me post links as I'm a new user)

I've just read the first 20+ pages of this thread, and understand I need to make sure I can turn the mattress over for longer life, and that the Habitat bed I choose doesn't have big gaps between the slats.

Is there anything else I need to look out for, or do you know any particular reason not to go for a Habitat mattress? By the way, I'm not after a memory foam mattress as I like to stay cool at night.

    Many thanks.

Hi - I am after advice on mattress or topper selection please ?

We got our Super King bed from Bensons about 5 years ago.

    It is a storage divan.

We then got a memory topper from Ebay about 2 years ago which initally moulded itself amazingly well and was like being hugged every night !

This seems to have lost it's huggability and we were looking to replace it so got a 2" topper off the web. This arrived last week and it is awful ! Seems to have amnesia on the "memory" foam front ! So we are returning it.

One night we slept on just the mattress - no memory foam toppers at all and it was like sleeping on a brick ! Is this because we need a new one or because we are just used to the memory foam toppers ?

Do we need a new topper or a new mattress ?

We can spend around £130 on a topper and would prefer that option as it is cheaper !

The mattress we have is a non-turn one.

Any advice would be great - pm's welcome if the answers would break mse rules !!

Just for info hubby has a bad back and is 12 stone - i am 13 stone and have inflammatory arthritis all over but my feet and ankles are really bad so need help asap !
It's not paranoia if they really are after you.
  • Hello all I finally got sleepmaster to agree to 75% refund on my faulty memory foam mattress, just need to get the money off them now.

So I now need your advise on a new bed. We currently have a 6ft bedstead but as my partner turns over loads in bed, I am thinking of getting 2 singles and joining them together (so nearly a super king size bed).

Looking on internet as Tim recommends not using the BIG retailers I have found two people sellling what seems to good to be a true, it is a single pocket sprung divan described as ...............
Each spring is housed in its own individual fabric pocket. This enables the springs to work independently of one another, offering unique support to the body shape and preventing pressure points. A luxurious sleeping experience with the highest level of support.
    Mattress Comfort Rating: Medium
    Mattress Type: Pocket Sprung
    Mattress Material: Damask
    Mattress Top Finish: Hand Tufted

For less than £200. The single has 800 pockets - my main worry is like other MSE members not knowing the make and being unable to try before you buy. The maker is Bedmaster whom I have not heard of and wonder if any of you have heard of them or have dealings with them? I am told buy one of the internet sellers that they are a new company but looking on companies house they seem to be a company who havent ever filed any accounts!

Please help recommend us a fantastic divan bed (preferably two single divans with storage)?

    kind regards

Tim thanks very much for your help, unfortunately spring mattresses' just dont do it for me, they are ok for a few months and then I can feel the springs, followed by pain etc.

I've tried so many spring mattress' even some expensive ones and we just dont get along. Personally I think that springs should never be in a mattress, just doesnt make sense to me but I'm no expert and just my opinion.

My friend has had a reflex foam mattress (I think its a reflex foam, its definitely not memory foam) for years and every time I go over, I just love sitting/lying on his bed! I've never owned one before so I feel I should give one a try.

I'm looking to buy from this site called www nest-sleep co uk ever heard of this site Tim? They seem to offer a good range of memory foam/latex and normal foam mattress'.

I've found a reflex foam mattress for about £200 on their site, but their memory foam mattress pages dont state the density of the memory foam etc so I'm a little unsure.

Any other ideas Tim or anyone else? I think I've left this whole mattress business a little too late and desparately in need of one.

Sorry to be a pest and thanks very much.

    Joshua

You are absolutely right about spring mattresses. They don't last as long as reflex foam/memory foam and pressure relief and spine alignment is poor with spring only mattresses. Putting memory foam on top of springs is better, but the springs wear out much quicker than a foam base. Why anyone would want to buy a spring mattress is beyond me.

The top rated mattress at Reviewcentre is NOT a spring mattress. Take a look at their reviews of all types of mattresses. The comments from the reviewers are quite helpful to people looking to buy :

I'd say that the very good reason not to buy from Habitat is the fact that for an open coil sprung mattress the one in the link is about double the price you should pay.

I can't really comment on the quality because they say very little about it.

There is a good chance that a non turn mattress could be worn out after 5 years. Have you rotated it end to end? Also what type of mattress is it?

There has been a huge influx of poor quality memory foam mattresses and toppers imported from China in the last couple of years, but often it is difficult to tell where it has come from. As a general rule don't buy a topper that doesn't display the density on the packaging. This doesn't guarantee the quality or where it comes from, but it does show that they are hiding less.

It isn't worth buying a new topper for a worn out mattress.

If the mattress is worn out then you would be better off getting a mattress with memory foam built in. If you really want I can go into detail why, but you should notice a huge improvement over a separate mattress and topper.

Twin sprung just means 2 layers of open coil springs. They are usually turnable, but don't compare to pocket sprung as far as support goes.

I really don't know where you get your info from, but if it is from the review site in your link then you are being a tad nieve. When you consider that people are more likely to post a complaint that a compliment it makes you very suspicous when there are two companies that take up most of the reviews, and most of those give a rating of 10 out of 10. And when you see the same member posting two reviews for the same product it really does start to stink.

It is actually well known that many review sites are full of fake reviews.

A good quality reflex foam will last no longer than good quality springs, and a poor quality reflex foam mattress should be no worse than a poor quality sprung mattress.

On problem with reflex foam is that it does start to break down, and you can end up with a dip where most of your weight usually is. However this varies depending on the quality of the reflex foam.

The fact is that any good quality mattresses should last at least 10 years if it is looked after properly, and turned (both over and lengthways) on a regular basis.

Don't you think you are being a tad hypocritical criticising that site when you yourself are known on this forum as being a spring mattress salesman? Most of the mattresses you sell are sprung are they not?

So tell me, is a mattress salesman who sells mostly spring mattresses going to give out impartial information on a forum? Is a spring mattress salesman going to recommend you buy anything other than spring mattresses, which don't last as long as foam?

I get my information from a couple of sites that, crucially, DO NOT SELL MATTRESSES. You must be the only person who thinks springs last as long as foam. The info that's out there says memory foam lasts much longer than springs. Pressure relief and spine alignment is also poor with spring mattresses. The only one I have seen who thinks otherwise is a spring mattress salesman. What a surprise.

Yes, I do know there are going to be a few fake reviews on Reviewcentre.com, but the vast majority of the reviews look like they are honest. I haven't come across any reviews that are obviously fake on that site. Most people seem honest reviewing mattresses on that site. I even noticed someone post a review then, a few weeks later, the same person made another review of the same mattress but, very importantly, he informs people it is an update on another review he made a few weeks before. Is this the double review you were talking about? If it was "fake" as you claimed then he wouldn't have told everyone he was reviewing it a second time. I think this is an honest person who wants to help people out by giving an update on how things are going. Calling someone like that "fake" is really sad, in my opinion.

Apart from this, you come up with no evidence to show the reviews on there are fake. I'm sure there are a few that slip through the net but, like the example I gave above, most of the reviewers seem very honest. It's a shame you had to resort to making these types of accusations again.
