  • i contacted ikea and they said i can use any mattress with a slatted base... are they just saying this to sell more?
  • Hi,

Wondering if anyone can give me some advice. I bought a new bedstead and matteress from the same company recently - had it delivered yesterday. Everything with the bedstead seems fine. After assembling it and putting the matteress on there seems to be a 5cm gap around the bed between the matteress and the side of the bed stead - anyone tell me if this is normal?

I can appreciate there maybe a couple of cm gaps between the side of the matteress and the side of the bed (the hole in which the matteress goes into), however 5cm seems a bit too much to me. I can quite easily see my daughter getting her foot or something trapped in there. Its also a slatted bed, so where there is a gap there is nothing underneath it, i.e. if my daughter put her foot in it her foot would go through the bed stright down to the floor.

Can anyone tell me what the average gap between a matteress and the side of the bed should be?

    Thanks

This is my first posting on the matter of mattresses.
I am looking to buy two mattresses so, naturally, I consulted MSE to see what, if any, advice is available.
I am pleasantly surprised to find such a vast quantity of postings on this subject.
It seems to me that Tim Deegan is the most prolific, competent and accomplished advisor in such matters, who shows endless patience in his responses which seem unbiased and eminently sensible. So, why is that so many people, having asked for and been given advice, then decide to ignore what they have been told? (I saw in one post he simply said 'I give up') Beats me.
Tim has declared that he is in the business of selling mattresses/beds but, as far as I can tell, he has never actively advertised or touted his business on MSE, although, if anyone knows better, I stand to be corrected.
The point of this posting is that, as a purchaser, I want to buy from someone who is reliable, trustworthy, competent and knowledgeable; Tim Deegan seems to fit the bill, so I want to buy from him, and that's what I intend to do: I don't want to take his advice and then buy from someone else. So, having done just a little research (not on MSE), I now know the name of Tim's business. If I can do it, so can others. If this already common knowledge on MSE, I apologise for wasting space.
I have no connection with Tim Deegan or anyone connected with him and live many miles from his business. In fact I had never heard of him or his business until yesterday when I started my search for mattresses.

    Hi all

I'd just like to second what Colbee has said - I too have absolutely no connection with Tim whatsoever, but after reading (most) of this thread & seeing his good advice, I decided to track down his shop & buy from him too.

Finding his shop is very easy, just google his username & 'mattresses' - it's the 1st link.

After doing this I mailed him through his shop for advice on what I should buy (offering to spend up to £150) - and he replied within the hour, giving me 2 options that were half of this price....despite there being more expensive options for sale in his shop.

Needless to say I have now ordered my mattress from his business!

Again I would like to reiterate that I have nothing whatsoever to do with Tim, & only heard of him 3 days ago on this thread - I am simply recommending a good service :T

    Emily.

    Tim,

What are your opinions on this Hypnos mattress?

    http://www.mattressman.co.uk/hypnos/mattresses/mattresses/double/P5610S0L/evesham.aspx

Seems to tick a lot of boxes from the first 33 pages of this thread, yes I really do plan to go through them all in order to educate myself

It appears to Hypnos's entry level pocket sprung mattress. Knowing how over priced many of their products usually are, I should think that you could get far more for your money from an independent manufacturer.
