i have ordered bunk beds for my two children 3yrs and 6yrs, slatted base(not sure of gap btween slats) do you think £300 for each mattress is too excessive for this age? ive been looking at the La Romantica Madrid. Also seen a decent one at John Lewis for a bit less.

To be honest you would be better off with good quality medium open coil sprung mattresses, as children would be too light to benefit from the memory foam and the pocket springs. Also open coil springs waould be fine with slats, and would be far cheaper.

Thanks for your explanation regarding pocket and open sprung mattresses. I am stuck with the slatted base so wondered what type of mattress you would recommend with it?
As I said earlier I need a 140 x 200 double euro size mattress so i was looking for a better ikea one but the hustad is pocket spring.
They also do foam mattresses which i think are designed more for slatted bases but they are thinner meaning a lower bed and i just thought they were worse than sprung ones?

If you want a good quality mattress then you would be better off going for an Independent UK manufacturer, who can usually supply the mattresses in continental sizes.

Thanks thats really helpful, at what age would they benefit from a pocket sprung mattress?

When they get to a small adult size, and also don't bounce on the bed any more, as pocket springs are more fragise than open coil springs.
  • Going to have a look at some local bed shops at the weekend just to get an idea about the differences between memory foam (Tempur style) and pocket sprung + Memory foam. Mainly to see the difference in how firm they are.

Buyng a matteress purely because our current one is knackered and for comfort - no ailments etc. Was planning to keep the existing duvan base that came with the set which I think is slightly sprung? Any reason not to keep this with a new matteress?

After reading though these forums and Tims input, I feel quite well informed in what to look for and ask, but I plan to order either a Ergoflex/Shantay or simlar or a Venice pocket sprung or similar depending on how we find each type. As Tim says, I can't understand how no turn is a feature as its clearly cheaper to make and won't last as long

One question that sprung (pun intended!) to mind was if we decided on a pocket sprung option, why would it not be better to buy a normal pocket sprung & and topper? Surely this would be more durable as the topper could be replaced?
  • tim u missed my question.. which type of mattress is best for slats... you said pocket spring isnt suitable.. thanks :D

Open coil sprung is the most suitable if you don't want to make modifications to the bed.

Tim, what is your opinion of the Sleepeezee Pocket Serene, i'm seriously considering buying it but after reading so much about mattresses i'm concerned that at £229 for the king size it's too good to be true

On that subject, how do pocket springs react to a bit of adult bouncing?

We are looking at 2 different bedsets, one is made by Health Beds and the other is by Hypnos. Can anyone give feedback on the quality of these beds?

    Thanks
