  • Having been out today to 3 retailers (Bensons, Dreams and a local supplier) and tried a good number of matteress's our favioured one is a Myers Grandeur. 70mm Memory foam & 20 mm Talay Latex foam on a double layer of 12.5 gauge spring (928 on king).
Originally set out for a pocket sprung memory foam after reading on here, but having tried many, we found them too soft. This one hit the spot on comfort for both of us.
Whether this is the best one on paper or not, it was certainly the most comfy in the 10 minutes we spent on it. If it weren't for the actual ability to try them, I would have chosen the 2000 pocket sprung memory foam 70mm ones they had.
I was also quite surprised that what was deemed as firm, I thought was quite nice. Some mediums where far too soft and a few just right (including the Myers).
I know Myers is one of the big brands and maybe not too recommended as seems to be the rule of thumb in these forums, but can't really argue with the ability to test it out. Who knows what it will be like in 12 - 24 months time, but I couldn't buy one just because its theortically better, but not as comfortable.
Its a shame the La Romantic range and some of the others aren't more widely available to try, but I guess thats life!

Our current matteress is a silent night and has now seen better days, but has lasted us 17 years so not too put off my bigger brands unless they have gone substantially down hill since then!

Would be interested to hear other peoples experience of Myers longivity and warrenty (12 years but is it any good?)

One of the others we liked was in Bensons and a Raylon 1440 reactafoam but was a bit steep at 600 odd.

    Hello,

Does anyone have a super king size from La Romantica?

I have an Ikea bed frame which will only take a 180cm wide mattress and 6 foot six inches (uk standard size for super king size) is 183cm.

    Thanks for any advice,

    Dave Cooke

Both UK and continental super king size are exactly the same size, so if your Ikea bed is super king size then it will take a UK superking size mattress. We are talking about soft furnishings here, not precision engineering, so dimensions are only rough anyway.

    Tim,

What is your opinion of Relaxsan mattresses?

I'm currently looking at this one http://www.bedstar.co.uk/shop/catalog/Relaxsan_Core_Range_Original_4FT_6_Double_Mattress-p-17530.html

How do they rate vs springs, the salesman in an independent shop recommended these above spring ones

    Thanks for your help

I've got them down as very low quality so something must have been said in this thread about it. Can't remember what though. :o

They are cheap and nasty reflex only foam mattresses that aren't worth over £100. This is probably the reason why the sales rep was recommending them, as he probably gets huge commision.

    Thanks e102gamma and Tim.

Any recommendations for a good firm Ortho non-memory foam mattress?

    Thanks

Hi Tim, settled on the La Romantica Violet, it seemed to tick most of the boxes for me at a price i'm comfortable with, ordered on ebay last night on a bit of an impulse, what's your considered opinion

Memory foam Matrress Toppers is it worth getting one instead of a Memory foam mattress - as there are huge savings to be made - just wondering if there are any disadvantages to Toppers?

There is a huge amount of research goes into developing mattresses, and making sure that all the components work well to gether. Using a topper is like a bolt on extra.

Anyone who has owned a topper, then changed to a mattress that contains memory foam will tell you that there is a huge improvement.
I have no experience of them personally.

My new bed arrived this morning. What, if anything, should I check to make sure it's OK? Obviously the ticking to make sure there are no marks etc. Anything else?
No one has any thoughts on this?

    Tim,

What are your opinions on this Hypnos mattress?

    http://www.mattressman.co.uk/hypnos/mattresses/mattresses/double/P5610S0L/evesham.aspx

Seems to tick a lot of boxes from the first 33 pages of this thread, yes I really do plan to go through them all in order to educate myself
