I can't actually recommend any on MSE. I can only give general advice on types of mattress.

How firm do you like your mattress, and what is your budget?

Thanks for replying Tim. It must be a full time job for you keeping up with this forum alone!

The max we could pay is about £450 - is that enough?

I like a mattress that feels padded (i.e. not hard when you lie on it) but that gives enough support so that turning over isn't a complete nightmare. I find turning over in bed the worst problem with my back, particularly after having a baby recently. I guess if I were to say on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being super firm and 1 being super soft, I probably like a 7. Does that help?

Thanks once again. Any tips would be much appreciated.

    Anna

p.s. I have a CostCo membership in case any of the ones that they sell are any good? Not sure.

You should be able to get a good quality medium to firm pocket sprung model for that price, but you would have to lay a sheet of peg board (or hard board) over the slats.

As for Costco, they only sell Silentnight, Sealy and Rest Assured, who are all part of the Silentnight group. So I'm sure you now know from experience not to bother with them.

    me too if possible
  • Could anyone tell me my rights. I bought a mattress just before Christmas off the internet. From the moment we unpacked it the house filled up with a chemical smell (we have a large 3 bed terrace), every room being affected. My wife had to sleep that night in the attic. I put up with it albeit having a strange nights sleep and was quite intoxicated the next day suffering dizzy lapses which is totally unusual for me.

We instantly got in touch with the owner who assured us that the smell was usual with new mattresses, caused by fire retardant used in their construction. I was advised to let it stand for a couple of days to let the smell dissipate and ring back if there was no change. A week later there was no change, the mattress still smelt to high heaven. We got back in touch with the owner of the firm daily after that, each time he informed us a further reason for putting up with the smell and that it would eventually go. Meanwhile my pregnant wife was being constantly affected by the sickly smell making her feel continuously nauseous. At that stage we asked for the mattress to be taken back. The owner still persisted that this could be overcome and that all mattresses had by law to be treated with fire retardant and would have this problem. I thought that this was a strange fact to be quoting from someone who specialises in the sale of mattresses as he did not even know that it was possible to get high quality mattresses (even organic ones) from a large number of small manufacturers (I had now been doing some research) that did not contain any fire retardant and still conformed to the bs kite marks.

By now I should have known I was dealing with a sub standard Internet seller but I still perservered with him. Our mattress was collected in the new year and even at this time the collection men could still smell the odour (4 weeks after delivery). I was promised a refund as soon as the mattress was returned. This obviously did not arrive.
By late Jan I contacted the firm who assured me the cheque would be in the post. Two weeks later having not recieved the cheque I contacted the owner who assured me it had been sent. He said he would put another in the post. Another two weeks passed and the cheque did not appear. (I still was being pretty patient). I got in touch again and the owner assured me it would be in the post that afternoon.
A weekor so later, now mid March, having not recieved it I rang and he said that it was on his desk and that he had forgotten to post it, could he make a bank transfer to my account. 5 working days later no funds have reached my account and I have a feeling my calls are being directed to answerphone on detection.

Could anyone, especially you Tim, tell me what I can do in this situation, have I given this internet firm enough time to sort the situation out before seeking legal advice?
People beware, dont put up with misleading information from so-called owner/experts. At the end of the day they are in business to do one thing, sell their own products to make a profit.
Also you do not need to put up with fire retardents.....do some research and look for hand made woollen ones which conform to all standards.
I just wish I could get my money back to buy one so that my wife and I can move off the floor into a real bed. Hopefully it might happen by mid May when our 4th is born

Thanks, I googled his name and came up with their eBay shop and the Bedlum website. Am about to order a Madrid mattress. Will let you know how it is.
  • hi,

does anyone have any opinions on a 18cm deep memory foam mattress (bultex - a french make - http://www.bultex.com/literie/matelas-extra-ferme/aria). Mattress felt comfortable and firm - density is 37kg/m2.

Is this liable to get too hot? how long would this type of mattress last? the vendor admitted that once it lost its shape it could be thrown away...

Also, any ideas where in the UK are good places to get bed slats? In some specialist bed stores the prices are silly...

    many thanks all

I don't know anything about that manufacturer, but 37kg memory foam isn't even worth having.
