Tim, can you tell me if pocket sprung mattresses are the same for Electric Beds as on a normal pocket sprung bed.

No they aren't. On an electric bed they have to made so that they can bend freely without the springs being crushed.

How far apart are the slats?

What is your budget, and for what size mattress?

How firm do you like your mattress?

The slats are probably about 3cm apart, it is for a double bed and we are looking to spend about £500. We don't like a really firm amttress.

Thanks so much for your advice.:T

  • Tim - really sorry if this question is answered somewhere in the 133 pages of posts but can I ask your advice please?

We have a king size wooden slatted base bed (bought from House of Fraser so it's quite solid) and want to replace our mattress because the one we've got (a Silentnight Van Gogh maybe??) is really starting to get worn at one side (my side). I have a back problem (2 herniated discs in my back) which means I need a decent mattress, plus we've got a 5 month old baby who likes to wake up a lot during the night so that means I'm in and out of my side of the bed quite a lot through the night. I think that's why our mattress has got a big dip in it at my side, from sitting on the edge of the bed feeding him or putting his dummy back in!

We can't afford to pay a fortune for a mattress as I'm currently earning Statutory Maternity Pay (£117 per week BEFORE tax) but equally we don't want a rubbish mattress that will only last a year or so.

I'm drawn to a sprung mattress perhaps with memory foam but wanted to ask your opinion and get some tips for which ones are good, how much to pay and where to buy. Any help would be very much appreciated. :A

ok, so i've rounded it down.

I really would rather not spend more than £150 on a mattress... seemingly it will just jump up £100 if I wanted to go for a much better product such as the la romantica charlotte.

i've seen a kozeesleep (yorkshire) backcare supreme for £155. Sadly it has a firmness of 10 but I hear for open coil this will actually help stop roll together and be better for my back?

or the other alternatives are la romantica adora (medium) or just going up higher for a la romantica violet (non-turn though)

for the kid I'm thinking a kozeesleep mayfair or la romantica adora would be fine?

also could anyone tell me if the charlotte is a non-turn or double sided?
  • Hi,
I'm looking for a king-size pocket sprung mattress and have found a the ViSpring Realm at Selfridges which is Furniture Village -10% (http://www.furniturevillage.co.uk/bedrooms/vi-springbedsteadrealmmattress) . I prefer the Supreme but don't want to strecth that much. For the same price or slightly cheaper I could get the Hypnos Reactive at House of Fraser (http://www.houseoffraser.co.uk/null+Hypnos+Reactive+1400+mattresses/Hypnos%20Reactive%201400%20mattresses,default,pd.html?cgid=12).
The specs for the Realm are below but I could not find the specs for the Hypnos so would appreciate any feedback. The Hypnos is available with an additional 200 springs for an extra £150. Would that be worth it?

    The Vi-Spring Bedstead Realm
Mattress Springs - 1326 1.52 mm wire springs 54mm diameter in individual sewn cotton calico pockets, hand formed into a honeycomb nested unit.
Mattress Border - 21cm deep with two rows of genuine hand side-stitching. Eight horizontal handles on King Size and above. Air vents on all sides. Borders upholstered in protective lambswool. Finished with piped ticking.
Mattress Upholstery - Upholstered with 1,350 gsm* bonded lambswool and cotton, 600 gsm of lambswool and 1,200 gsm blended lambswool and cotton. Covered with your choice of the finest quality Belgian ticking from our Collection click here for details. Hand tufted with felt washers.

Hypnos Reactive 1400 mattress, only available at House of Fraser. No need to turn bedstead mattress with over 1400 individually pocketed springs. Covered with 2 layers of cotton felt, silk wool, memory foam and anti-microbial polyester to create the perfect mattress for your bedstead. The mattress is encapsulated in a high quality Belgium tick, traditionally tufted with wool tufts. The sides of the mattress are finished with 2 rows of hand side stitching prolonging the life of the mattress and support right to the edge of the bed.

Hi Tim, I have tried to gather as much information as possible from the thread. Obviously could not manage to read the whole thing sitting in a cafe (no internet connection at home as yet). I have just purchased the following bed from Heals at half price and need a mattress for the same.

    http://www.heals.co.uk/Bedroom-Furniture/Portica-Bed-Range/invt/porticabed&bklist=icat,2,mycatref

Before reading your thread, I didn't even know what a slat is. Now I think I do and will be measuring the gap between the slats today to see what sort of mattress will be helpful. My guess is it is around 2 inches. From what I have read, I think a pocket sprund mattress is what i should go for, if possible with memory form. I have back problem from time to time. Do you agree re choice about pocket sprung with memory foam.

How is the following mattress at half price (not 799 as mentioned in link)?

    http://www.houseoffraser.co.uk/Hypnos+Sleepcare+Classic+king+mattress/115121676,default,pd.html

There is a promotion on certain sections at house of fraser (checked it after I saw a comment another forumite above) by which 2 items get you 50% discount.

Please let me know what your advice is. Really need to order a mattress soon.

    Hi.

Are you sure they are 3cm apart and not 3"? If they are only 3cm apart, then you can use any kind of mattress.

What types of mattress have you tried?
