The first one is a firm open coil sprung mattress, and if the price is anything to go by, it is probably the best quality out of the three.

As you say, the second one is non turn. This isn't quite as important with open coil sprung, but it should be taken into consideration.

As for the third one, for a pocket sprung mattress to be that price, it must be very low quality, otherwise they couldn't make any money on it.

Tim - really sorry if this question is answered somewhere in the 133 pages of posts but can I ask your advice please?

We have a king size wooden slatted base bed (bought from House of Fraser so it's quite solid) and want to replace our mattress because the one we've got (a Silentnight Van Gogh maybe??) is really starting to get worn at one side (my side). I have a back problem (2 herniated discs in my back) which means I need a decent mattress, plus we've got a 5 month old baby who likes to wake up a lot during the night so that means I'm in and out of my side of the bed quite a lot through the night. I think that's why our mattress has got a big dip in it at my side, from sitting on the edge of the bed feeding him or putting his dummy back in!

We can't afford to pay a fortune for a mattress as I'm currently earning Statutory Maternity Pay (£117 per week BEFORE tax) but equally we don't want a rubbish mattress that will only last a year or so.

I'm drawn to a sprung mattress perhaps with memory foam but wanted to ask your opinion and get some tips for which ones are good, how much to pay and where to buy. Any help would be very much appreciated. :A

I can't actually recommend any on MSE. I can only give general advice on types of mattress.

How firm do you like your mattress, and what is your budget?

i've seen a kozeesleep (yorkshire) backcare supreme for £155. Sadly it has a firmness of 10 but I hear for open coil this will actually help stop roll together and be better for my back?

It's actually the other way around. It's pocket sprung that will stop roll together.

Hi Tim, I have tried to gather as much information as possible from the thread. Obviously could not manage to read the whole thing sitting in a cafe (no internet connection at home as yet). I have just purchased the following bed from Heals at half price and need a mattress for the same.

    http://www.heals.co.uk/Bedroom-Furniture/Portica-Bed-Range/invt/porticabed&bklist=icat,2,mycatref

Before reading your thread, I didn't even know what a slat is. Now I think I do and will be measuring the gap between the slats today to see what sort of mattress will be helpful. My guess is it is around 2 inches. From what I have read, I think a pocket sprund mattress is what i should go for, if possible with memory form. I have back problem from time to time. Do you agree re choice about pocket sprung with memory foam.

How is the following mattress at half price (not 799 as mentioned in link)?

    http://www.houseoffraser.co.uk/Hypnos+Sleepcare+Classic+king+mattress/115121676,default,pd.html

There is a promotion on certain sections at house of fraser (checked it after I saw a comment another forumite above) by which 2 items get you 50% discount.

Please let me know what your advice is. Really need to order a mattress soon.

The mattress in the link is pocket sprung only, and would last longest with gaps between the slats of up to 1" (although you can lay a sheet of hardboard over the slats).

You should also ask yourself how much the mattress is really worth if they are going to knock 50% off.
  • Would someone be able to propose an alternative to a Vi-Spring Bedstead Realm mattress? My wife and I prefer that to a similarly priced Hypnos, but the forum lists the brand as overpriced for what it is. This is a pocket spring (1326) bedstead mattress and we would get it in a king size with half medium and half soft since my wife is lighter than me (80kg+ vs 50kg). We wanted to get a bedstead-specific mattress as we will be getting a leather upholstered bedstead.
Would appreciate general feedback as I understand that people are reluctant to recommend specific brands/websites.
    Thanks a lot!

Neither of the links state the density of the memory foam or the depth. They are two very important things to take into account when putchasing a memory foam mattress. The density should be between 60 and 70kg per m3, and the depth should be between 2" and 2.5".

Both are also very expensive for non turn mattresses that won't last as long.

There are on line sellers who give satisfaction guarantees.

    Hi
    Thanks for reply
I finally decided for kaymed visco pocket 1600 (regular)

The density is very high, which could make changing position in bed difficult.

Do you have a link so that I can see if it has proper pocket springs, or reflex foam encapsulated ones?

I think that because it says '38mm rebound foam to bottom' (which is reflex foam), and that is says that it has a mock stitched border, that it does sound like it is reflex foam encapsulated pocket springs. This type of mattress is normally much cheaper than one with proper pocket springs.

It is a good make, but you can get higher quality and spec for less, and even two sided.

I've finally pulled the trigger on a 3'6"x6'6" Staples Carnoustie. There was pretty much no room in the £599 price. I tried my best but they were really tough and I only managed to get £15 off. Bah! I couldn't even get the drawers thrown in. :(

I guess I'm not cut out for this sort of thing. xD

Thanks everyone for the help. I hope the bed works out for me but if it doesn't I'll probably squeal about it on here. :o

Now to look for some custom sized bedding. _pale_
