Thanks, I googled his name and came up with their eBay shop and the Bedlum website. Am about to order a Madrid mattress. Will let you know how it is.

:o we bought a la romantica madrid mattress 3 weeks ago now. it suits us fine, we dont get too warm on the memory foam and do not miss our electric blanket. however, it is quite firm, moreso than i had imagined. definitely good quality though and great service from bedlum beds re queries and delivery.

Memory foam will tend to be rather firm. Did you try out some memory foam mattresses in a store before purchasing the Madrid?

Memory foam must be high density to give you the support it is designed to, so you are right in the fact that you won't find a good quality memory foam mattress softer than a medium. However the main purpose of the memory foam is to mould to your body, and to give even support without pressure points. It is actually the layer under the memory foam that decides the overall firmness.
  • Distance between slats is 6cm ( open space between each one). From what ive read on here i can get pocket sprung and put hard board over slats
    or open coil.
I would like a firm matress to fit 5ft bed.
Not sure what the difference is in the two types ?
Whats the advantage of buying pocket and hardboard why not just buy open coil ?
Want to gett he right thing just thinking of getting a peice of hardboard that size and gettin it through the hall/ doorway the bed came in sections !
    Any advice please

Many people ask us the difference between open coil sprung mattresses and pocket sprung mattresses.
Well if you can picture lots of individual springs standing upright, and each spring is within a fabric pocket, well that’s what pocket sprung means. Each spring on it's own isn't actually very firm, but because there are so many they give you excellent support due to the fact that they contour to your body.

Open coil means that there are usually only around 360 springs (for a double mattress). Each of the springs is linked together within a wire frame. These are the traditional type of springs that are usually cheaper than pocket sprung.

Remember your mattress won't be in two parts, and will be bigger than a sheet of hardboard. Also there is no reason why the hardboard can't be in two parts.
  • Thanks Tim and fab pictures too !
If the open coil are cheaper can you get one that gives as much support as pocket springs ?
(Im getting older now and am starting to feel achey and stiff so need support )
if I need to get a pocket spring one how much of the bed needs to be covered in hardboard and do you get two long peices (top to bottom )or two wide peices ( side to side)

With open coil springs you are sleeping on a sprung platform. With pocket springs they all work independently, so they will give far better support.

You would be better off with two long peices of hardboard. Some DIY stores actually sell them in 2' widths. The hardboard doesn't have to go right to the edge of the bed, as you don't sleep on the 6" right next to the edge.
  • Hi Tim,

Just been to Dreams and almost decided on what we were after (for interested - a leather bedstead & their "Factory Prices" "Memory mattress": A superbly comfortable mattress utilizing Memory Foam technology, with traditional Pocket Springs. A "no need to turn" model, finished in a luxury knitted cotton), and then I read your notes in this thread and have seen what a mistake it would have been to order the mattress at least from them!!

We're after a medium memory foam/ pocket spring double mattress and don't want to spend over 500 if possible.

Any you could recommend at all? I appreciate you need to be careful with advertising etc.

    Thanks for any help!!
    Dan
