  • Thanks anyway Tim - so if I said La ROMANTICA, Madrid mattress - would you be able to give an indication as to whether it's worth going for? This will be for 2 people who like medium - not firm mattresses...

    Cheers

Title says it all really. Looking for recommendations on where to buy a new mattress. Looking for a high street shop, as I want to look/try it before I buy, so that rules out websites.

Has anyone god good/bad experience with the likes of Bensons, dreams ect? Or would anyone recommend a specific shop?

    Thanks.

If you have any smaller retailers (i.e. not one of the big chains) near you I would look at them first.

I checked one out yesterday and oh my goodness I've never lay on anything so comfortable! I was just wondering if anyone has experience of them and if they're really worth the money long term?

Also does any one know if latex gives off the same chemical 'aroma' as memory foam?

    Hi Tim,
I wonder if you could help me. I am looking for a single mattress to go on a cabin bed (wooden base). It is for my 14 year old daughter who weighs about 9 stone, and she has trouble sleeping. Budget would be up to about £150. If you could reccomend the spec. and the types rather than the manufacturer. Many thanks in advance.

I bought 3 la romantica oriel mattresses for my teenagers for £54 each and they are very happy with them, say they're much better than the mattresses that came with the beds. you'll have to watch the mattress depth for the top bunk, there's usually a mark with a maximum depth.

I forgot to say, when I was buying my bed I was told that Staples were discontinuing models to make way for 'new technology'. They didn't know what this consisted of but I can't help thinking it may herald a downturn in Staples' quality. I am a natural pessimist though.

Trying a bed out for 10 mins in a shop will only give you a rough idea. You really need to sleep on a bed before you can decide if it is perfect for you. There are some sellers who do give a satisfaction guarantee, but read the terms and conditions carefully.

As for the big chain stores, you might want to do searches in the MSE forums for them.

Anyone who has been in this forum for a long time will know about my hate of pillow top mattresses, which are one of the bed industry's worst sales gimmicks. Most pillow top mattresses have loose fillings in them that feel really comfortable when they are new. However after a while the fillings can move about leaving you sleeping in a hollow.

Another problem with pillow top mattresses is that they are usually non turn, so they won't last as long as a two sided mattress.

I would avaoid buying an own brand mattress from the big chain stores, as they are often made to a lower spec.

It isn't the memory foam that gives off the chemical smell, it is the fire retardents that are used on all upholstery. The reason the smell lasts longer with memory foam is due to the high density. The smell does go away quite soon (if you get the smell at all).

I would say that this mattress is way over priced.....sorry.
