Have you paid for it yet?

    Thanks for the response.

I paid by credit card on 28/2/09 and tried to cancel on 3/3/09 but they refused.

When I chose it they had a 20% discount offer which the salesman told me ended on 1/3/09, so I felt hurried into the purchase, but the offer was still running on 3/3/09.

I was initially looking for a softer mattress because I sleep on my side, but because my back was aching at the time I chose a firm one (I weigh approximately 13st).

Try calling your credit card company, and tell that you were pressured into the sale because of the time limit.

Also contact trading standards. You should have a cooling off period because they didn't actually have it in stock for you to walk away with. You may also be covered by distance selling regs because it is being delivered.

    Hello

Has anyone bought a double mattress recently with memory foam. Am looking for one for my double bed as the silent night one is totally knackered and less than 2 years old! Reading these forums the memory foam needs to be 2cms deep. Has anyone found any online that I could have a look at?

    Thanks :D
    oooooooh i luv a bargain :)
  • Okay, after saying I didn't have time to go to independent retailers due to them being too far away, I decided that for such an important pucrhase, I couldn't buy without trying first!

I went to 4 different retailers in and around the milton keynes area and I've found two that have mattresses I'm very keen on. The first is by Dreamland (link here). The warehouse for this retailer is absolutely huge and they had loads of mattresses to try out. There were actually 3 there that I could have bought, all for under £150 but I think I like the posted one the most. The owner was really friendly too and didn't try to feed me the rubbish that the likes of Dreams etc did. And all the mattresses there are turnable (the ones I tried at least). The only concern I have is that I don't know anything about the manufacturer.

The second I found was a Kozee Sleep one, damask cover but I can't remember the model name. Didn't try it out as much as in the first store but I know about the brand and it was £5 dearer.

Tim/Mark, have you any views on Dreamland as a manufacturer? And in your opinion, would it be better to go for the unknown manufacturer or the Kozee sleep one? I think they were both as comfortable as each other, or maybe the Dreamland one was slightly more comfortable. Also, would love to purchase from the retailer of the Dreamland one as she was so friendly and helpful.

I've just spoken to them on the phone, and they have informed me that it is against company policy to cancel at this stage.

    I'll try your suggestions tomorrow.

If I am stuck with it, would a sprung base make a significant difference to the softness?

    Thank you for your help.

The one on the link appears to be the lower spec (normally much cheaper), reflex foam encapsulated pocket spring type. Also the memory foam should really be between 2" and 2.5" to get the full benefit.

This is a summary of the different types of memory foam mattress:

Memory foam mattresses come in three basic designs:

    1. Reflex foam with memory foam. You will find that most memory foam mattresses are constructed like this for a couple of reasons. a) any idiot can make one. You just need to take a slab of reflex foam, glue a sheet of memory foam to it, then put it in a cover. b) they are often vacuum packed and rolled up to make transport cheaper. So for the above reasons there have been loads of companies starting up to jump on the memory foam band wagon, although very few are actually experienced bed manufacturers. Due to the lack of air flow these mattresses can be hot.

    2. Open coil sprung with memory foam. These are similar to reflex foam with memory foam as far as support goes. However the avantage is that air can circulate through the spring layer to dissipate the heat. These mattresses are also usually made by experienced bed manufacturers, and therefore the quality and performance is often better.

    3. Pocket sprung with memory foam. This category can be split into two sections a) there is the type with full size proper pocket springs, so you get the benefits of the contouring from the pocket springs combined with the pressure relieving support from the memory foam moulding to your body. The air can also flow freely through the spring layer. There are also now a few manufacturers who are making this type of mattress with memory foam on both sides, so it can be turned to increase the life of the mattress. b) There is now an inferior type of pocket sprung and memory foam mattress on the market that contains smaller pocket springs that are encapsulated in reflex foam. So you don't get the same level of support that you do with the full size pocket springs, and due to the reflex foam surrounding the springs, you don't get the air flow through the mattress.

With all the above you should make sure that the memory foam is 2" to 2.5" deep, and that the density is between 60 and 70kg per m3.

Many thanks for this Tim. I actually went to M&S today to see the bed in it's glory. I didnt like it much. It was far too soft for me.

I did however find a Hypnos Reactive 1200 from House of Fraser which was very good. It's a standard pocket sprung, without memory foam etc. It's firm which is what I want.
Including the 30% off, i think a super king was £750.
Same as this i think but with 1200 springs. The 1400 spring version was softer as it has memory foam which did not suit me.

Is this Hypnos good? and Hypnos in general?

Barry, is this the one you bought?

    How are you finding it?

I'm not sure, mine has adifferent pattern on it but the description looks similar.
Don't think there would be much of a price difference to mine when delivery to NI is added so glad i'm not out of pocket too much!!
I think it is firm but thats the way i wanted it.
Haven't had any more bother with the heat than my previous mattress.
I would recommend it but would like an experts opinion (preferably Tim's!!) on what i have bought.

    To recap:
"I recently bought a "Dorlux Comfort Collection - Memory Foam" 4ft 6 mattress.
    Any opinions on it?
Was considering the Romantica from Tim but my wife preferred to see one before we bought it and as it cost £249 and was delivered next day from a local retailer we went with this one."

    Hi Tim,
I have been reading your posts on mattresses and have found this one in size that may fit the bill however I am worried that in my inexperience I may end up with something that isn't good quality and value! It's a Joseph mattress...

I don't know if this falls into your small supplier catergory or not so would be really grateful if I could have your opinion on it??!
    thanks

That should be 2 inches deep (5cm). 2cm wouldn't be worth having.
