Which mattress? (merged threads)

Hi ventured into the shop in Abingdon and was greeted warmly by the two salesman, rather than muck about I cut to the chase and asked for a pocket sprung mattress suitable for my frame and my wifes, inevitably I discussed a budget thus not trying every bed in the showroom and wasting the chaps and my time, so I left the hypnos, somnus and duniopillo to keep each other company.
After trying a number of mattresses we got down to three
Hypnos 1200 pocket ortho supreme wool / cotton filled nice tufting...yes I know but it would be bit over budget but couldn't resist as it looked well made and it was offered at a good price. most expensive
Shakespere beds - Elizabethan 1000 spring - traditional like the above with a mix of fillings , obviously a price difference however very nice feel and good value, not so good tufting...I must have a tufting fetish. least expensive
Independantly british made mattress for this company, 1200 pocket cotton and wool filling with 5 cm latex topped and cashmere top cover,no turn, tufted again however not as nice as that Hypnos...I should see somone I think after reading this thread I've gone mad. middle price
Anyway after trying all three a number of times on our backs and sides, we both ending up going for the independant, it just felt right and I personally couldn't choose much between the Shakespere and the Hypnos except of course the quality of materials both on the firm side.
It was pointed out that a no turn would not last as long etc and some honest advice was given about all the mattreses and all were tested on the same bed frame, but to be fair we have always been poor at turning the mattress. They were not sure who did sell a double sided mem/latex foam mattress as it was felt that the foam would not be supportive enough as a base against the slats or a board.
So thanks for all the advice on here, I belive I have bought the best mattress within our budget avoided the big companies and we are both happy.
It's put my faith back into independants after a bad experience with flooring...... another story.
Good to read it went well.0 -
I am still looking around for a pocket sprung mattress with memory foam of 2 to 2 1/2 inches. I have found this Relyon bed (http://www.mattressman.co.uk/relyon/mattresses/mattresses/king_size/P308S0L/luxury_memory_pocket_platinum_1475.aspx)
Has anyone got any comments re its standard?
Thanks
As you probably know, I usually recommend to go for smaller independent manufacturers.
It doesn't state the density of the memory foam anywhere?0 -
Its really worth shopping around and getting a good matteres. You can cut through all the marketing and just try! I got a frame from bedworld and mattress from John Lewis. JL were expensive but bedworld cheap so overall price very good. This was 10 years ago and bed still very comfy. I had wanted to go for cheap, cheap but wife insisted we do not scrimp on mattress. The only problem is if we stay in hotels we notice the bed is not as comfy!0

Tim or anyone else in the know, could I have abit of advice please. We need a double mattress for our spare room. It's only used occasionally so a low end mattress should be ok.
I've found these in a local retailer:

http://www.thedivancentre.co.uk/product.php?id=242
Do you think there will be a big difference in terms of comfort and longevity?
Thanks!0 -

There are a few things that concern me about both of these models. If you look at the second one it looks very flat from the beading on the edge, and it also says that it has only a 2cm polyester pad on top of the felt. This would make it a budget spec. However the second one is more expensive than the first, so I'd presume the first one is a lower spec.
Even the more expensive second one says it should give 4 to 5 years service, but you should expect far more from that with a good quality open coil sprung mattress.
They also give you a bit of sales bull, by saying that most budget mattresses have 15 gauge springs, and that this one has 12.5 gauge. The truth is that almost all open coil sprung mattresses have 13 to 13.5 gauge springs in a medium, and 12.5 gauge in a firm.
You should be able to get a top end open coil sprung mattress for similar money.0 -
I want to thank Tim for his excellent advice. There was no pressure to buy from his store and we spent a lot of time looking around. After some trepidation ordering online without trying it we bought a new mattress. We opted against memory foam as my wife gets very hot in bed:p
So we got a Restus Savoy mattress. Bedlam delivered it on time. They kept me informed every step of the way even down to the names and telephone number of the drivers. Their service was excellent.
As for the mattress... wow we cannot believe how comfortable it is. One of the best purchases we ever made. Well worth it.
So thanks Tim.0 -

You really should do a forum search on MSE for the manufacturers before you even consider any of them.0 -
