Hi Tim, Thanks for your earlier response.

Ok. I have a few of q's for you.

    1. What is the difference between the La Romatica Madrid & Lovell.

    2. I see the Lovell has 1500 springs. is this a firmer bed. We are looking for a medium/medium firm.

    3. You are recommending a mattress with foam top & bottom and I understand that this is so that it can be turned and hence will increase it's life. Is that the only reason and to what effect would you reckon it extends the life?

    4. When ordering one of the above mattresses would we need to stipulate a soft or medium firmness?

    5. We are down in Somerset. I understand that your delivery charge is £35.

    Thanks Tim

Sorry Tim, i have one more question. we have just ordered a brand new bedstead from a local independent supplier. It is a solid oak bed and I am pretty sure it has solid wood slats but I can't recall the gap between each slat.

If I was to buy one of the La Romantica pocket sprung/memory foam mattresses, would I need to get some peg board if the gaps were larger than 1"?

    Many thanks

I think you'd be better off contacting Tim via his website for a few of those questions.

I believe Tim has said that 3" is OK for pocket spring memory foam. The foam will help stop the springs pushing through the gaps.

    =============================

I've had a slight change of plan and am looking to go for a 3'6"x6'6" - slightly less wide than the 4' bed I was considering previously.

The price I've been quoted is £649/£599 with/without drawers. How much extra does it really cost to add the drawers to a divan? Could I get away with a starting point of £499 with the drawers? Is there less margin in a smaller bed?

There is an Ebay seller which has been mentioned on here quite a few times:

We trawled the shops to try out the mattresses, Coles had a good selection. We then bought the one we liked best from mattressman.

I've never seen that seller mentioned on here before.

It is worth considering that one thing we do better than the rest of the world in th UK is make beds and mattresses. In general those made on the continent tend to be of lower quality.

I have just bought a faux leather sleigh bed (like this one here, but it has a wooden frame instead of metal). From what I've learnt so far I need an open coil sprung mattress as the slats are more than 1" apart and I don't want memory foam.

I'd not recommend limiting yourself to open coil / memory foam only because of the slats, I've got a slatted metal bedstead with a similar gap. Since the mattress I brought is pocket sprung/memory foam (Vogue empress 7cm memory foam on 1400 springs and so far so good although I will have to sleep on it for a few more weeks though to give it a proper review) I just brought a large sheet of pegboard to put underneath it, it does the job fine and is out of sight anyway.

As a comparison to a divan top, when I was smashing up the old divan base the top to that was nothing more then thick grey cardboard, so the brown pegboard I'm using is probably twice as strong as that was....

    Cardboard????

Most platform top bases are hardboard on top, which is what peg board is.

Cheers. Let us know how you get on.

Hi ventured into the shop in Abingdon and was greeted warmly by the two salesman, rather than muck about I cut to the chase and asked for a pocket sprung mattress suitable for my frame and my wifes, inevitably I discussed a budget thus not trying every bed in the showroom and wasting the chaps and my time, so I left the hypnos, somnus and duniopillo to keep each other company.

After trying a number of mattresses we got down to three

Hypnos 1200 pocket ortho supreme wool / cotton filled nice tufting...yes I know but it would be bit over budget but couldn't resist as it looked well made and it was offered at a good price. most expensive

Shakespere beds - Elizabethan 1000 spring - traditional like the above with a mix of fillings , obviously a price difference however very nice feel and good value, not so good tufting...I must have a tufting fetish. least expensive

Independantly british made mattress for this company, 1200 pocket cotton and wool filling with 5 cm latex topped and cashmere top cover,no turn, tufted again however not as nice as that Hypnos...I should see somone I think after reading this thread I've gone mad. middle price

Anyway after trying all three a number of times on our backs and sides, we both ending up going for the independant, it just felt right and I personally couldn't choose much between the Shakespere and the Hypnos except of course the quality of materials both on the firm side.

It was pointed out that a no turn would not last as long etc and some honest advice was given about all the mattreses and all were tested on the same bed frame, but to be fair we have always been poor at turning the mattress. They were not sure who did sell a double sided mem/latex foam mattress as it was felt that the foam would not be supportive enough as a base against the slats or a board.

So thanks for all the advice on here, I belive I have bought the best mattress within our budget avoided the big companies and we are both happy.

It's put my faith back into independants after a bad experience with flooring...... another story.

I am still looking around for a pocket sprung mattress with memory foam of 2 to 2 1/2 inches. I have found this Relyon bed (http://www.mattressman.co.uk/relyon/mattresses/mattresses/king_size/P308S0L/luxury_memory_pocket_platinum_1475.aspx)

Has anyone got any comments re its standard?

    Thanks
