It is worth considering that one thing we do better than the rest of the world in th UK is make beds and mattresses. In general those made on the continent tend to be of lower quality.

Hi Tim,
I am looking for a new mattress for my double bed. I have a silent night miracoil which hasnt even lasted me 2 years! I can feel the springs under the mattress cover! I now have a bad back when I wake up the morning.
Was looking at two double mattresses. One is from Argos and other from Tesco.

Tesco one -

What are your opinions on these? Am never going to buy silent night again!

Many reduced items at Argos only tend to be reduced from their normal price to a more realistic price.
As for the Tesco one. This is the better one out of the two, but I'd try to find out the depth and density of the memory foam if I were you.
As a general rule you will get more for your money with smaller independent manufacturers.0 -

We have a miracoil mattress, its only 18 months old and knackered too.
So am now going to buy a new bed, and we are thinking about a divan, however there are hundreds about, anyone got any suggestions on whats the best brand etc.0 -
I recently bought a "Dorlux Comfort Collection - Memory Foam" 4ft 6 mattress.
Any opinions on it?
Was considering the Romantica from Tim but my wife preferred to see one before we bought it and as it cost £249 and was delivered next day from a local retailer we went with this one.0 -
hey all,
Has anyone had any experience with M&S mattresses? Are they any good?
I'm looking at this one:

£599 for a super king.
It is a medium with 1.5inches of memory foam. I will try it out tomorrow instore. I prefer to deal with somewhere that is fixed price without the hassle of haggling from a starting price of £2k+ down to £6-800.

The one on the link appears to be the lower spec (normally much cheaper), reflex foam encapsulated pocket spring type. Also the memory foam should really be between 2" and 2.5" to get the full benefit.
This is a summary of the different types of memory foam mattress:
Memory foam mattresses come in three basic designs:
1. Reflex foam with memory foam. You will find that most memory foam mattresses are constructed like this for a couple of reasons. a) any idiot can make one. You just need to take a slab of reflex foam, glue a sheet of memory foam to it, then put it in a cover. b) they are often vacuum packed and rolled up to make transport cheaper. So for the above reasons there have been loads of companies starting up to jump on the memory foam band wagon, although very few are actually experienced bed manufacturers. Due to the lack of air flow these mattresses can be hot.
2. Open coil sprung with memory foam. These are similar to reflex foam with memory foam as far as support goes. However the avantage is that air can circulate through the spring layer to dissipate the heat. These mattresses are also usually made by experienced bed manufacturers, and therefore the quality and performance is often better.
3. Pocket sprung with memory foam. This category can be split into two sections a) there is the type with full size proper pocket springs, so you get the benefits of the contouring from the pocket springs combined with the pressure relieving support from the memory foam moulding to your body. The air can also flow freely through the spring layer. There are also now a few manufacturers who are making this type of mattress with memory foam on both sides, so it can be turned to increase the life of the mattress. b) There is now an inferior type of pocket sprung and memory foam mattress on the market that contains smaller pocket springs that are encapsulated in reflex foam. So you don't get the same level of support that you do with the full size pocket springs, and due to the reflex foam surrounding the springs, you don't get the air flow through the mattress.
With all the above you should make sure that the memory foam is 2" to 2.5" deep, and that the density is between 60 and 70kg per m3.0 -

If you buy from tesco they let you send it back within the first month for free as long as you do not remove the packaging.0 -
