When you tried them did you lie on them as you would at home? ie on your side etc. When people try matts in a store they often lie on their back, rigid looking as if they are waiting to be measured up for a coffin.
Lol, I did do that at first, but then I read this forum and tested as I would normally sleep at home, on my back or side.

How far apart are the slats and are they curved of flat?
They're probably about 4-5" and I they have a slight curve to them

Your budget means that you will be looking at open coil spring matts but a pocket spring mattress would be your best but it's difficult to find a sub £200 one unless you know where to look, but they do exist. And if you can sretch to £250 all the better. Whereabouts in the country are you?
I didn't think I could get a pocket spring unless the slats were 1" or less apart? Was thinking if there was a way I could maybe put a board over the slats but as they're curved I didn't think was a good idea. I live in Northampton.

Double (twin sprung) coil spring mattresses are not a favourite of mine. They are usually very deep which means they can look daft if the headboard of your bed is shallow and I never lay on one yet that I thought was comfortable or offered any benefit. Plus when buying fitted sheets check they will fit properly.
Thanks, I didn't actually consider the possibility of the bed sheet not fitting! Not liking the thinner mattresses I'd seen, I wanted to get a deep one but hadn't thought of looking out for that!

    Hi Tim,

I've just been superking mattress shopping and tried a few that I like. May i have your opinions on the below:

    Sleepeezee Cairo - £999 (Dreams) - 2000 pocket springs
    Slumberland Westminster - £1099 (Dreams) 1400 springs
    Slumberland Belgravia - £1149 (Dreams) - 1400 springs
    Milbrook Visco Royal - £929 (absolutebeds.co.uk) - 1400/7cm foam
    Sleepshaper Duo - £849 - (absolutebeds.co.uk) 1400springs/5cm foam

I quite liked the SleepShaper and Sleepeezee Cairo but to be honest, without sleeping on them for the night, I cant really tell the difference.

However, I do know that the prices are pretty expensive..... What do you think? I like my mattress firm/extra firm.

Yes the advice about about pocket spring matts on slats is correct, I missed that bit sorry. I must admit the gap you have between yours is a bit too much.

Only you know what firmness/comfort is right for you, you can't be told by others what you should have, we are all different. It least by trying some you have done your homework. You can have three models on a website or in a shop advertised as 'medium' but they may each feel different.

Another tact (if your watching your budget) is go for a less expensive but still acceptably comfortable mattress and lay a spare duvet over the top to give it extra comfort, your fitted sheets should still fit. You can always buy a better quality mattress at some point in the future, and put the inexpensive one in the spare room (assuming you have one)

    Hi Tim,

Along with my wife, we have spent the weekend looking at a new King Size mattress for our Wooden Bedstead. We are looking at a pocket sprung memory foam layer mattress.

Can you tell me what you think of the mattress on the following link?http://www.mattressesworld.co.uk/p/Body_Impressions_Roma_Pocket_Sprung_700_Mattress.htm#

    Thanks
  • Markp, thanks for all your advice, I can't really find any close independant retailers and to be honest I don't really have much time during the week and weekends to go round to them. Tested the ones in the obvious places but thanks to this forum, I know better than to buy from them!

I really want to get one from the internet, and hope I should be able to get a good quality open sprung double for my budget of up to £200? I really want to try the Romantica but there aren't any retailers anywhere near me (when I called them they said my nearest retailer was Doncaster!) Haven't tried to find out about Kozeesleep and Restus.

As I understand it, one manufacturer's firm could be another's medium which is why I'm wary about buying without trying but unless I want to pay over the odds for a mattress, I don't think I have much choice. I liked the myers devon bed in Dreams which was rated as firm, but I also like the Slumberland Hazelmere (Bensons Beds) which was rated as medium-soft! (I thought they were pretty similar).

So would really appreciate if someone could give me advice on whether the La Romantica, Restus and Kozeesleep ranges come up relatively firm or soft?

    Appreciate all the help, thanks!

2.5cm of memory foam, that's 1".....forget it, it's not worth even considering.

theres a lot of spam about again.

theres only one way to choose a mattress and that is to go and try one out.
no one can recommend a certain mattress to someone else.
there are just too many variables in peeps comfort levels.
    Get some gorm.

    Hi Tim,

I wasn't advertising, just offering to be of assistance. it seems unusual that someone can run down our website and there is no right for us to reply.

My belief is that the post is posted by a competitor.
If any customer contacted us with a damaged product, they would get a replacement.

    Richard

Your post was clear advertising. You posted your web site address, and then went on to say that you are the cheapest around. Even your name 'Bedzilla' gave away your trade.

You have to stay within the forum rules, you can give out impartial general advice, but you can't advise anyone in any way to buy from you, or to mention your business. I find it saves problems if you don't even comment on any posts which mention anything that you sell.

It is quite possible that it was posted by a competitor, but unfortunately you can't defend yourself on here. All you can do is report the post in question. I know it is unfair that competitors can get away with it, but it's just something that we have to put up with. It's just like someone bad mouthing you verbally, you can't really stop it.

I've noticed that Bomb1 has only 1 post, so you could be right. If you click on the warning triangle, then you can report the post.

I am not familiar with these makes but each of these like most others will have different models with varying levels of firmness and quality. Open coil mattresses labeled as 'Orthopaedic' or 'Backcare' or 'Firmer feel' are usually firm because they use thicker 12.5 gauge wire. Medium matts will have thinner 13.5 gauge wire. But different layers of upholstery will also influence the feel, hence the variation. Very cheap firm mattress can be horrid and offer little benefit over the floor and very cheap soft/ medium matts can lose their shape quickly.

Body weight and what kind of base the mattress is being put on will also have influences on how it feels.

There maybe better deals online but if it's not you can try beforehand just make sure your won't be out of pocket if you have to return it simply because you don't like it.

If you are worried about making a mistake then sometimes it's best to play safe and go with one you've tried because you know what your getting. If that means going back to the 'big boys' just be wary of expensive delivery charges or any 'add ons' they may try to persuade you with.
