It sounds like he wasn't telling the truth when he said that it would be impossible to match the price and still make a profit. However he probably was telling the truth about the minimum price fixing, and it sounds like he may rely on this to still make a large profit.

Minimum price fixing is very common, and is used to help stop retailers going bust through price wars. There are often companies who will break the rules, and they sometimes do get struck off supplier lists.

There isn't usually a maximum price that retailers can sell at. So you can often find that shops in exclusive parts of cities can get away with charging huge prices.

Speaking from experience with Harrison I am not aware of any such agreements, no minimum selling prices or other price fixing agreements and would suggest that any such anti-competitve trading tactic as suggested is pretty much a thing of the past (and I am not implying this manufacturer ever did), the retailer in question is probably just trying it on. To suggest (as he did) that he would be selling at a loss if he matched the other retailers price is highly unlikely.

I agree that he may be trying it on, but price fixing is very common, and is sometimes used to keep prices high so that a brand isn't devalued.

It is even more common that manufacturers won't sell to internet only sellers because they have low overheads and can sell cheaper, so the shop retailers complain that they can't compete.

  • (Firm mattress for a child to sleep on? hmm, is that a good idea?)

Mattresses are a personal choice, when we bought ours last year we went to a local store, found the best one for us then ordered it online. How about trying the mattresses out for real, then you could ask a sales assistance the difference. I've always bought pocket sprung but I know they're more costly!
  • Hi

I am looking at the below Millbrook Vista 2500 and can get it for £397.00

In the kingsize mattress there are 2500 individually hand nested pocket springs, and is filled with wool, silk polyester and cotton fillings for comfort and support. The Vista 2500 mattress is hand tufted with woolen tufts and has 8 handles as well as 16 brass air vents to help increase ventilation around the mattress. Suitable for a wide range of divan bases, or bedsteads.

After reading some of the posts....I don't have a spare 2-3 days I guess this maybe over the top spring wise, so would this be a wiser buy at £310.00

    Millbrook Mirage 1400 Mattress

1400 individually hand nested pocket springs
2 rows of hand side stitching to borders
    8 Upholstered flag stitched handles
    16 brassed ventilators
    Hypo allergenic interliner
    Luxurious layer of resilient Polyester/Cotton
Topped with layer of soft lambswool
Tufted with jiffy ties and wool washers
    Twofold Jacquard woven damask

    Any advice is most welcome

    In a word yes.

What type of bed are you putting it on?
  • In a word yes.

I guess this in reference to the 1400 representing a good buy in comparison to the 2500 spring
