Ah I never knew that! Thanks for telling me!
Do you think this set would last and be comfy?

(Sorry no good at doing proper links)
Thanks,

The actual brand that Argos sell are very limited when you take groups into account, but Airsprung don't have a poor name for reliability, so you should be ok as far as that goes.
As for comfort, it would be difficult to tell from the limited information on the web site. If the same model is available in other stores, then you could try it out first to get a rough idea.0 -
Thanks so much! I wish I had found you before we bought it from Argos in the first place!0

The thing is you don't know if a bed is any good by trying it in a shop either. Just 10 mins on a mattress is no way of telling how it will be to sleep on, or how long it will last.
Hi,
I am thinking of buying a mattress topper that is portable so I can take it with me on holiday (I have a bad back and find it difficult to sleep on bad hotel mattresses).
Could anyone recommend a mattress memory foam topper please. I am thinking about the Tempur portable topper but it is very expensive:

or I found this one today and they are also offering next day delivery and a completely free 30 day trial:

What do you think?
Thanks,

If I wanted a topper I'd probably go for something like this (but I don't, so I haven't looked into it much
):

It appears to be the ideal depth and density and a lot cheaper than the two you've looked at.
Anyone have any thoughts on this mattress?

I tried the medium firmness one and it seemed just right. I'm pretty sure it's double sided even though the second link says non-turn. There was no mention of non-turn on the mattress in the shop (it said to turn regularly) and the salesman said it was double sided.
I do have a few concerns about it:
I'm not sure how deep it is. It mentioned 8" springs but if the springs are actually 8" long (I don't know if that's what it means) I'm not sure the mattress was deep enough to have a worth while amount of filling (I could be wrong - I didn't measure it and I may also be talking rubbish).
I'm not sure of the make-up of the filling. It's man-made but if I listen to the sales guy it's only one layer (is that likely?).
It seems hard to find online. Staples are still making it (they said they'd make me a custom sized one at least) so I guess it's not discontinued. I'm not sure why no one else sells it.
The price was quoted as £699. I've yet to haggle but it's still a fair amount of change (how much room do you think there is in this for a custom 4'x6'6"?). Ideally I'd go for a smaller manufacturer but without being able to try it and being a custom size, unable to return it, it would be a complete gamble to buy an untested bed online.
I may well email Staples to see if I can get any more details about it (unless someone here scares me off it).0 -

Just to clarify, the size you want is 4'0 x 6'6 and is it mattress only or with the divan base too? And I take it you have tried this 'Carnoustie' model in a store? Assuming the £699 is the price for the above size what was the price for the standard 4'0 x 6'3?0 -
£699 for a 4'0"x6'6" with the sprung divan base. Yes, I've tried the Carnoustie (double) in store. I don't actually know what the price for a small double is (I'll ask if you think it would be helpful) but the standard double is also £699. They were actually selling a double off for £499 in a sale but said it was because it was a cancelled order and that they usually only display the king. Hopefully that's nothing to worry about.0

It's normal for 4'0 & 4'6 x 6'3 to be the same price. All manufactures (to my knowledge) will add a surcharge for a non standard size. For an extra 3" on the length most would charge about 15 - 20% extra. If they are selling a standard size model for £499 (even if it is a 'cancelled' order) I would suggest there is plenty of room for manouvre on the £699 price. Don't think just because your asking for custom made size you cannot haggle. The first on line retailer you linked to was asking £579 for 4'6 x 6'3 ( + delivery ). Was the retailer you visited able to offer you any other makes that were less expensive but available in the size you want?
By the way I am not familiar with the model you have looked at but it looks like it's a traditional tufted pocket spring mattress. After the fillings have been put on and the top panels are in place and tape edged the mattress is put in a huge vice. The mattress is compressed and then tufts are fed though. The point being the tufts keep the springs and fillings taut. So in addition to the 8" springs there is likely to being several layers of filling, but exactly what the guy in the shop probably won't know.0 -
The price included delivery BTW. The only other double-sided pocket spring mattresses he had were from the SilentNight stable (Sealy and Pocket Spring Bed Company). It's basically the only bed I've seen in any store in my area that I've liked and seems to tick the right boxes.
No one's heard any horror stories regarding Staples? (should I even ask that? I don't want to scare myself)
What do you think my starting price should be? I don't want to take the mick and end up annoying him.I'm looking for a headboard as well. Do you think I could get him to throw it in for free as part of the deal?
Thanks for the info.0 -
If your happy with the product both in comfort and quality and the shop you've seen it in is reputable and has been helpful that's all to the good. I suggest he will be more surprised if you don't ask for is absolute best price.
Start at £600, keep it light hearted and friendly, you like the bed but let him know it's more than you wanted to spend, tell him 'it ticks all the boxes' except the price is a bit high. I think in the present climate it's unlikely he won't budge, and if he's not willing to come down all the way to £600 how about some freebies, pillows etc. Check that the delivery guys will put it together for you when they deliver. Confirm the delivery lead time and only pay a deposit, pay the rest if you can, on delivery.
As for Staples I know of them but that is all so it would not be right to comment. Please don't take that comment as positive or negative. Ask the shop how long they have dealt with them. BTW just check the situation with them regarding the special size n case there is an issue at a later date. Check your reciept to make it absolutely clear that it is a 4'0 x 6'6 you are ordering.0 -
Yes the headboard for free is a good one0
