  • Your welcome. Forums like this and the net as a whole is great for gathering info particularly when considering a major purchase, it's just the dangers of 'information overload' setting in are likely!
  • Three years ago we bought a Relyon oak slatted bedstead complete with a Relyon Renoir mattress. We want to replace the mattress with a better quality one. We have been looking round the stores but there aren't very many where we live so are trying to get some advice before we go and try a few where there is more choice.

The brands we have been looking at are Harrison, Hypnos and Vi-Spring. We would value opinions on these and any others worthy of consideration.

  • I've only tried those makes in a shop but, for what it's worth, they did seem nice. They also seemed over priced however and the Harrison mattresses I tried sounded rather gimmicky, with springs in springs/on springs etc and a few were non-turn (= bad). If the price doesn't faze you, you could probably do a lot worse though.
  • I'm thinking of buying this bed http://www.eurobed.co.uk/la-romantica/la-romantica-charlotte.php
Anyone have any experience of it?

Could anyone give me any comments about the Sealy Knightsbridge Ortho?
Its the only bed within our price range, which feels and looks right. £650 for a kingsize divan from an independent bed shop.

I doubt anyone ever saw it at that price. :p

Ignoring Miracoil and other such abominations, what normally goes wrong with a mattress? Is it just the springs that go or do you need to worry about the filling too? Anything else? How can you tell (if you can) that a mattress will last, just from looking at it?

Apart from continuous spring systems that you mention, then springs normally only fail if they are either faulty, or they are miss treated.

As for the fillings, it depends on the quality and amount of fillings used, as well as the fabric and stitching.

Unfortunately to the untrained eye it would be very difficult to spot high quality from low quality.

You will get more for your money with independent manufacturers. The brands you mention are all part of huge multinational groups.

Do a search for that brand in these forums.

The problem is that there is very little choice in the Highlands of Scotland and we wouldn't know where to go in Edinburgh or Glasgow for impartial advice. How do we find out who the independents are and where we can try them?
