    I found one!
    10% off - 3267 just worked online.
    Thanks everyone anyway. x

    Hi Greenstuff
Thank you for posting the discount code.
I was wondering if you had had any joy in being able to use the code. Its just that I was considering their beds as well and put it into their codes box in their checkout page.
Once I typed it in, it said:
"* Your promotion code will be verified by sales staff when we call you back. This may affect your order total"

I discovered that even though this code works on their site it actually expired 19 Dec 2008. Though I expect that if they do call you up, then they could well give you the discount anyway in order to secure the sale?? Wonder if you would get a bigger discount if you went into one of their showrooms??
    Sorry...thinking out loud.

BTW It really is a lot of work to strip a lacquered piece of furniture. Not impossible by any means, but it would put the bed out of commission for several days
: stripping, cleaning, sanding, staining, sealing, painting/varnishing/waxing (2 coats of whichever one you choose with sanding inbetween)!! Alternative is to get it professionally resprayed. Very expensive.
Perhaps try Taurus beds on Finchley Road. They have some black beds.

Hi to everybody else as well.
Have been looking through this site with interest for the last week.
Started out clear about what I wanted, quickly became very confused and have only recently figured out what I want:
Pocket sprung in the appropriate 1000-1800 spring range
    Turnable
    Damask cover
    Hand tufted
    Side stitched for more support
Prefer natural fillings, but will also go for mix of natural/synthetic
    £350 - 400 max budget incl delivery.

Tried out some beds at Taurus beds on Finchley Road (figured I might as well do as Tim suggested and go see an independent). T
he owner got pretty angry about why I wanted to know where they got their mattresses from. Eventually told me it was M&R Beddings in Bradford. Has anybody bought one of these before? The top one looked pretty well made and ticked all my boxes except for price, £537. Would not budge on price though. Think I may have annoyed him a bit. Oh well....

Went to Beds Ltd in West Kensington today and tried out a few including some M&R ones. Not as impressed as before, but I was by a Rest assured Marlowe 1000 Pocket Classic Ortho. I know its verboten as they are part of the group which includes Silent Night, but it was darned comfortable! They also had another independent: Harmony beds, although it was a bit too soft for me: Diamond 1500. Felt that their quality was not so great either.

Have found telephone numbers for both indy's if anyone wants them.

Also went to their sister shop West London Bedding Centres, where they had an M&R I liked. Berlin 1200, again ticking all boxes except it had felt tufts, hand stitched as far as I could tell. Don't know if this an indicator of lower quality. Anyone know?
The girl gave me a price of £479, though I didn't haggle much as I was in a hurry to get to work and probably wasn't going to buy from them anyway. Would prefer to deal direct with manufacturer if I can. Assume I would be able to get a better deal that way. Emailed them and am waiting a reply.

Cannot get any links to the beds I liked as their websites don't list any beds, just manufacturers. Don't want to post an M&R or Harmony link as I might get banned. and actually not sure yet how to do it anyway.

Also emailed La Romantica about London stockists, but no reply yet. Anybody know if they're displayed anywhere in London?

Also found an American guide to haggling with bed shop people. I will post a link when I find it again.

Apologies for the length of this post. Its my first time and I don't know if it will be deleted because I mentioned names or come across as an M&R salesman, which I'm not.

Would really appreciate any replies to my questions. Would like to order quite soon as I'm absolutely desperate for some sleep.

    Ta

  • Is a mattress protector a good idea? I've never used one before.

It's a Slumberland Bronze slumber deluxe and my budget is up to £300

They don't appear to make it any more. Do you know what type of springs it contains, how firm it is, etc?

A mattress protector is essential, as you can't remove the covers from most mattresses. However if the mattress is good quality you don't need to go for an expensive thick quilted one.
  • not sure what firmness my current bed is its a a myers celcius if that helps .....

Tim you said look for small independant firms but without any clues as to who these firms are or where they can be found then the larger well known firms will always get the larger market share ? So can yoiu not just post a list of these mysterious matress manufacturers......:p
  • Tim can you please give me a bit of advice please?

I'm after a single mattress for my daughter and I've found on ebay a 10inch memory foam mattress with about 7cm of that actual memory foam for £99. Is this any good and you've mentioned about a mattress protector, what sort of quality mattress protector should I be looking for?

    Thanks Ian

7cm of memory foam is a little too deep. Try and stick to around 5cm (2") otherwise the mattress could make you too warm.

For a memory foam mattress you should only use a thin mattress protector so that your body heat can still react with the memory foam. A breathable waterproof one would be best.

No, that would be breaking MSE rules. Try shopping around on line.
  • Blinkin heck Tim do you ever sleep? lol.

Thanks for the prompt reply. I know this mattress comes with a free luxury maxicool cover, so I'm not sure whether this would make a difference.

How would you benefit financially from mentioning manufacturers you don't sell?
