I'm happy with the bed as much as a layperson trying it in a shop for 20 minutes can be. I'll cogitate on it for a while as I don't want to rush anything like this.
Thanks a lot. You're a great help. :T0 -
Staples are/were one of the better manufacturers of the many who have been taken over by large groups. The group they are part of is the Hilding Alders Group who also own Myers, Slumberland, Sleepwell, Jensen, and Dunlopillo. My only concern would be the reports that Dunlopillo's quality has dropped since they were taken over.
What part of the country do you live in e102gamma?0 -
I have the same concern but I don't really see a choice.

Yes but independent bed shops don't necessarily translate into sellers for small independent bed makers.
I've seen, off the top of my head, Vi-spring, Hypnos, Millbrook, SilentNight, Sealy, Pocket Spring Bed Company, KozeeSleep (very limited), Myers, Staples, Highgate and Harrison. Which doesn't sound too bad but the vast majority are not what I'm looking for e.g. they're open sprung, memory foam, too firm, etc.
Really the only one that I've tried that ticks all the boxes (apart from being a small independent) is the Staples.
I have considered a trip to West Yorkshire but decided it was a bit over the top.0 -

Some retailers have up to 500% mark up, but other run on a much lower profit margin. So it would depend on who you are buying from. How do you think some stores can afford to offer 50% off in sales?
Tim, I have to say this has intrigued me because whilst looking for a new mattress I seemed to get the back-up of a manager of an independant bed store(Not far from you) who I tried to get to honour his price-match challenge on a mattress.
It was a Harrison Mattress and I managed to find it on the internet for £100 cheaper(at the time I didn't actually know his price till I went instore). When I told him he said that was impossible and that he could not match the price as he'd be making no money on so it must be old/damaged stock. I informed him the company has been in my local village ever since I was born and I view them as very reputable and it was brand new made to order.
He then went on some sales talk telling me there is some embargo that all Harrison suppliers sign up to, to guarantee certain prices of items they sell. He would be reporting this place to Harrison and they would be struck off the suppliers list.
In the end I was like "OK then....."
Would you know if this is true what he was saying as I thought there would be a huge markup on these beds for the name and he should have had no problem matching the price.0 -

It sounds like he wasn't telling the truth when he said that it would be impossible to match the price and still make a profit. However he probably was telling the truth about the minimum price fixing, and it sounds like he may rely on this to still make a large profit.
Minimum price fixing is very common, and is used to help stop retailers going bust through price wars. There are often companies who will break the rules, and they sometimes do get struck off supplier lists.
There isn't usually a maximum price that retailers can sell at. So you can often find that shops in exclusive parts of cities can get away with charging huge prices.0
