Memory foam (as well as the knitted fabric usually used with it) has a much warmer touch than traditional damask mattresses. So als long as you use a flanlette sheet instead of a cold cotton one, then there should be no need to use an electric blanket with a memory foam mattress anyway.0 -

I am very happy to give out advice to anyone who asks. However I do get slightly miffed by the number of PM's I get from people who asked advice, then went completely against my advice, then come back a few months later asking for help because they have bought the wrong mattress and are having problems with it. The reason I spend a huge amount of my valuable time giving out advice is so that people don't make a big mistake in the first place.0

- You may well have mentioned this before but what constitutes a good size for a pocket spring? I guess it depends on spring count (I know to look for around 1000-1800) but would you call any particular size too small/large?
- If a mattress is a good depth - 10"+ - does that guarantee a good amount of filling (hope I'm using the right term)? Can manufacturers take any shortcuts in this regard?
- How do I know the filling in the mattress won't go lumpy? Is this a non-issue?
I'm used to mattresses that don't actually have any. ^_^
Am I thinking too much into this?0 -
Thanks a lot. You're a great help. I guess I'll strike latex off the list of possibilities.

- It would be very rare that the manufacturer even states the spring size, so it would be very difficult to tell.
- A 10"+ mattress should have a good amount of filling, but some will use cheap quality fillings, and others will use multiple layers of good quality.
- It shouldn't be an issue in a good quality mattress that is looked after.

Thanks to all who have contributed to this thread.
I have spent a fair amount of time reading around the recommendations of various makes and styles. I am having difficulty finding negative reviews of any of the over critisized companies. Could anyone be so kind and point any out?0 -
I had it in mind that if I was having it custom made I'd ask the manufacturer what size/gauge springs they used. I don't know if it's useful to know that though. >.>
I wouldn't have thought that a company that custom makes mattresses would use the smaller cheaper pocket springs anyway.
Having one custom made could cost a fortune.0 -
It could well do.
I guess I'm as armed as I'm going to be. Time to start looking at beds. xD
Thanks again.0 -
hi tim
im just new on this thread and on hunt for a mattress for a king size oak bed (slated) am having a second thought between the memory foam and firm pocket sprung as i have a scoliosis. i've tried a lot in the shop and starting to like to a medium to firm mattress. i've looked into sealy's posturepedic range but after reading the post here saying that they are now silentnight bed and lowered they're quality i looked into kingkoil and this is the only place i can get that would deliver to ireland at a good price

im wondering if this is a good quality mattress. haven't tried this myself but thinking if this is on a firmer side then might get a memory foam topper

i like the memory foam but worried that it would be too warm for my husband so a topper might be a good option in case he doesn't like it i could just remove it
would appreciate your valued opinion
thanks and regards
