Hi.. I am been reading this thread for some time and appreciate the efforts Tim is putting..however i am bit confused and unable to make a decision. I am looking for a Pocket sprung Memory foam mattress which is reasonable.

I would appreciate if someone can review and let me know their comments

    Budget is apprx 300 pounds.

    This also applies to infra487:

There are essentially two different types of pocket sprung/memory foam mattress:
    1. There is the type that is made up from proper, full size pocket springs that will give you the huge benefits of contoured support that you get from a pocket sprung mattress. This is then topped (usually on one side, but sometimes both sides) with high density memory foam. On this type of mattress the air can easily circulate through the spring layer to help remove the heat from the memory foam.
    2. Then there is the fairly new reflex foam encapsulated pocket spring type. This type has been designed to jump onto the pocket sprung/memory foam band wagon, whilst being far cheaper to manufacture and transport. The pocket springs are usually much smaller than the proper full size ones found in quality pocket sprung/memory foam mattresses. These speings are then surrounded by reflex foam in order to support them. The reflex foam surrounding the springs prevents a free flow of air through the spring layer to provide cooling. Thprings don't give anywhere near as good support as the full size ones. You will also often find that the spring count, depth of the memory foam, and density of the memory foam isn't mentioned in the adverts. This is usually because the standards are so low.
The reason I typed in bold is because I have repeated this a few times, so by typing it in bold it should be easier to find again.
  • Wow, 113 is a lot of pages. I'm almost disappointed now I've reached the end. ^_^

My mattress seems to be giving up the ghost so I'm looking for a new one. This thread has been very helpful but it's probably left me with more questions than when I started.
    1. Apart from the usual specs are there any questions I should ask about a bed?
    2. For pocket springs, how would you rate different gauges of wire, i.e. firm, medium etc. or does this not apply?
    3. I tend to get hot in bed which is a big problem for me. Would it be better to avoid memory foam/latex?
Even a fraction of a degree warmer would be a concern.
    4. Does latex react to heat like memory foam, or just pressure?
I'm kind of put off by the chemicals involved with memory foam so would probably go for latex if I ended up with the 'moulding' type of mattress.
    5. Tim reckons 2" of depth for memory foam is ideal. What about for latex? What about other specs e.g. density etc.? Do they apply?
    6. I'm not sure if anyone can answer this but...is a good latex mattress better than a good pocket sprung?
Subjective obviously and I've noted Tim's bad experience at a hotel. :)
    7. Anyone have an opinion on whether your sleeping position should have any bearing on the type of mattress to get?
I sleep on my side (43% of Brits do apparently) and was wondering if a softer mattress would be better, or something like memory foam/latex (or?). My arm sometimes goes a bit numb on my current firm one. >.<
    8. Is there a European equivalent to the small double, i.e. 120x200 instead of 120x190? If not, can you get a European large single from a UK manufacturer? Could a 120x200 bed be made and would it cost a lot?
    9. If it was custom made what should I ask for/about, i.e. fillings etc.?
I don't think I'd want one with horse hair. 0_0
    10. Could I request the manufacturer to use no chemical flame retardants (I'm assuming they're used) or would this present a legal problem?
I could be worrying over nothing. Maybe it's a bad idea. :o
    11. Do I ask too many questions? :D

I'm sure I'll think of some more.
  • I had virtually decided to go for a Madrid mattress, but SWMBO insists that being able to use an electric blanket is a must, would the ideal solution be a mattress with memory foam on one side (for spring/summer) and then turn over for winter so an electric blanket could be used? or is memory foam naturally less cold so you wouldn't need electric blanket anyway?

  • Have been reading this post and kind of decided to go for La Romantic Madrid, my only concern is that it has memory foam on both sides.

Can anybody suggest me any other mattress that has memory foam or latex on one side and normal topping on the other side?icon7.gif

Slonik please could you tell me where did you get the La Romantic Madrid bed from?icon7.gif

Bedlum Beds (I did mention it in a couple of my posts... ;) )

All the pocket sprung memory foam combinations we came across in the high street stores were single sided so they're not hard to find but whether they have a 'normal' topping on the underside I couldn't say. They do cost a lot more than our Madrid mattress though and we wanted doubled sided for longevity.

    1. It depends on what questions you ask about the usual specs. Most importantly, ask about their return policy.
    2. It all depends on the number of springs. So if a mattress had a certain gauge spring in an 800 pocket sprung mattress that was soft, then if the same gauge springs were used in a 1800 spring mattress it would feel much firmer due to the concentration of springs. So just ask the firmness instead.
    3. I would avoid latex, but memory foam with proper full size springs (not reflex foam encapsulated ones) should be fine.
    4. Latex is more down to pressure.
    5. From my experience I'd avoid it. However I should think a similar depth would apply. Don't get low density as I could feel the springs through the Latex on the one I tried.
    6. I'n my personal opinion 'No'. Latex appears to be popular for the reason that it is made from a natural product. And for this reason the prices are very high.
    7. Any type of mattress that contours to your body would help to take the pressure off your arm and shoulder.
    8. No there isn't as standard, but many independent manufacturers would be happy to make you one.
    9. It depends on what you want. I wouldn't get carried away with the natural fillings thing. Many synthetic fillings are actually better.
    10. Flame retardents are a legal requirement. All mattresses sold in the UK must meet British Standards, which must be shown on a label sewn onto the mattress.
    11. Not at all........ask away.
    Regards
    Tim
