  • Tim (or anyone else that may know!)

I hope you may be able to pint me in the right direction. I have a divan bed that was made to 7ft wide x 6ft long. It got water damaged recently and I don't really want to but another divan base, just teh mattress if I can get away with it.

The mattress I had was a Harrison Amber with 1008 Pocket springs.

My question is - can I get a mattress made to this size with Pocket Springs and memory foam (as you seem to reccomend). If so who makes them, even Harrisons don't seem to do the ones with memory foam and if they did they'd be £3k + I expect.

Can you give me any help..or PM me.

    Many Thanks
  • Hello all,
    I`m trying to get some info on a `highgate rosedale ` double mattress which seems to have the features I want , such as ;
    pocket springs 800 - 1200
    firm or medium firm
    double-sided
good fillings ( wool, cotton fibre ,coir, etc.)
    hand tufted
    2 - 3 rows hand side stitching
    vents
    handles
    damask cover

Any other mattress with similar spec`s would be acceptable.
Thank you all in advance for any help you can offer.

Are you sure they still make the Rosedale, it isn't listed on their web site?

The spec you list actually applies to a huge number of models. In fact you will probably find that most manufacturers will make a similar one.
  • Having read most of this thread, I'm no nearer making a decision about our new bed. I don't really like the idea of memory foam as OH suffers dreadfully with overheating particularly during the night.
I've looked on a few sites and am stunned at the difference in price for, what appears to be, the same product.
I've looked at the Charlotte bed and found prices at £499 and £709!
Does anyone have any favourable experiences buying from online beds.com?
  • Bought the Madrid about a week ago and not 100% sure to be honest, I've not had a bad night as such but the missus has not slept at all. It's not firm enough for both of us really and I'm wondering if it's the memory foam that we're just not getting on with. Also the tufts are mental deep, I run my foot across the bed and can feel the drops like almost 10cm down! Why so deep?

The mattress protector is only 1/2cm thick so it's nothing to do with that.

I'm gonna plump for an alternative or a refund now.

Very interesting - at last a negative report on the Madrid. Can we please allow Tim to comment on the points that Shatners Bassoon makes ?

    Sorry, I'm not allowed

I must say I'm surprised that anyone would consider this mattress not firm enough. I'm over 16 stone and have always bought firm mattresses and it supports me better than any mattress I've previously had. Neither of us would want anything firmer to be honest but it is of course a matter of personal taste and what's important is that you both get on with it. As I said in a previous post, we've found the memory foam really does take some getting used to but after a week I'd have thought you'd have acclimatised. Maybe it's this that your wife can't get on with. The tufting is certainly deep but neither myself of my wife have found it offputting. It is certainly noticeable though - moreso when you first get into bed.

As I mentioned previously, it's very different trying out a mattress in a showroom and actually sleeping on it overnight so the thing which comes out of this situation is the need for a genuine 'comfort' guarantee offered by the supplier. Don't know how long your guarantee runs for but maybe the best thing would be to have a chat with the supplier and see what they suggest by way of a replacement or get a refund and try something else. Perhaps try a normal pocket sprung mattress to determine if the foam is the real issue here.

It's easy just selling stuff but the true test of a retail business is how well it deals with those customers who are unhappy for whatever reason. The fact that these guarantees are offered by both high street and internet retailers is evidence that, whether you can try them out in a showroom or not, suiting people of numerous different shapes, sizes, needs and personal preferences to mattresses can be quite difficult.

Please report back on how you get on. Best of luck!

Ps - I do have one negative point about our Madrid - we sleep in a converted loft with sloping ceilings and my wife's inadvertently banged her head twice now due to the fact that we're sleeping in such an elevated position. :)

More seriously though, changing to a very deep mattress will bring additional considerations into the buying equation where, for example, headroom is limited or for those who have fitted bedding which simply won't accommodate it.
  • Well another night on it and I've woken with a slightly sore shoulder and lower back which is something I had with my old knackered mattress.

Anyway, a mail has been sent with a contact number in for me so I'm awaiting a call from the retailer based on the fact that there is a 100% satisfaction guarantee on this mattress.

    Thanks Tim ,
What I meant to ask was if anyone has personal experience of buying and using this mattress, so I can compare it with others .
